Rohit Sharma Replaces Kohli As ODI Captain

Rohit Sharma: Wriddhiman Saha has been picked as the second wicketkeeper, with Hanuma Vihari returning to the senior squad. Virat Kohli’s five-year reign as India’s ODI captain has come to an end with Rohit Sharma’s appointment.

The Indian selectors made the choice to replace Kohli. The BCCI merely stated in a media release on Wednesday that the selectors had “agreed” Rohit should lead the ODI and T20I squads “moving forward,” without elaborating on why. Ajinkya Rahane will be replaced as Test vice-captain by Rohit Sharma.

Kohli started in September, just days before the T20 World Cup, that he would be standing down as India’s T20I captain after the tournament.

After losses against Pakistan and New Zealand in the group round, India was unable to advance to the knockout stages. Kohli said he was stepping down due to his “immense workload” in a statement. Kohli “thought” the move would allow him to be “completely ready” to lead India in Test and One-Day International cricket.

Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami among those who return to the Test squad alongside Rohit Sharma.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul returned to an 18-man team after missing the New Zealand Tests due to injury.

Hanuma Vihari, who was sent to South Africa with the India A team and has reached fifty in three of his four innings on the trip, is also back and may slot into the middle order right away, especially with Jadeja out. With Pant’s comeback, Wriddhiman Saha will be relegate to the role of reserve wicketkeeper after performing admirably in the New Zealand Tests.

Jayant Yadav, who made an impressive comeback to Test cricket after a four-year absence, was retain as the second frontline spinner behind R Ashwin. Shardul Thakur was also recalled, giving the squad a total of six fast-bowling options to complement the two primary spinners.

Cheteshwar Pujara, Shreyas Iyer, and Ajinkya Rahane have all been retains from the line-up that faced New Zealand.

Suryakumar Yadav has been left out of the squad now that Vihari has return.

Navdeep Saini, Deepak Chahar, Arzan Nagwaswalla, and left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar are the only players from the ‘A’ squad currently on tour, though four of them will remain with the senior team as part of the reserve bowling contingent: fast bowlers Navdeep Saini, Deepak Chahar, and Arzan Nagwaswalla, and left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar.

Despite KS Bharat’s good performance in Kanpur, where he came on as a substitute for the injured Saha and effected a number of swift dismissals, the selectors kept faith in Saha as the second wicketkeeper.

Kohli’s role as India’s white-ball skipper has come to an end

Kohli’s term as white-ball leader, which he took over full-time in January 2017, comes to an end with Rohit’s ascension to ODI captaincy. While his record is impressive – just three captains have a better win-loss record in 50 or more men’s ODIs – India failed to win an ICC event during his tenure.

They were runners-up in the 2017 Champions Trophy and lost in the 50-over World Cup semi-finals in 2019. After back-to-back losses to Pakistan and New Zealand in Kohli’s lone T20 World Cup as captain, India was eliminate after the group stage last month in the UAE.

Kohli had stated a desire to stay as ODI captain in addition to being the Test captain at the time of his declaration that he will surrender the T20I captaincy. “I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian squad in Test and ODI cricket,” he said in a statement. That will no longer be the case, albeit he will remain captain in the longest format.

However, Rahane’s lack of runs has been questioned since that century. In his last 16 Tests, he has an average of 24.39, bringing his career average below 40. Rahane missed the second Test in Mumbai due to injury after scoring 35. And 4 in the first Test against New Zealand in Kanpur.

The India squad is likely to convene in Mumbai ahead of their departure. On December 12 after the South Africa visit was postponed by a week following a period of uncertainty following the discovery of novel Covid-19 variant Omicron in southern Africa.

On tour, they’ll play three Tests and as many ODIs as they can. With the T20Is, which were initially planned, to be plays later

The Boxing Day Test in Centurion kicks off the tour. Which will be follows by Tests at the Wanderers and Newlands. Kohli is expecting to play his 100th Test in the series’ last match, which will take place from January 11-15.
