Kurtis Patterson hit 55 against Brisbane Heat, Kelly four-for help Scorchers

Kurtis Patterson: As the Scorchers defend a modest 157, the Heat’s top order blunder cost them the game. On Wednesday night, the Perth Scorchers used a hallmark bowling effort to thwart Brisbane Heat’s chase and celebrate a possibly rare home match in style.

The Scorchers’ outstanding attack overpowered the Heat with frequent wickets and held their composure against a late Heat assault to prove their prowess at defending small totals once again after recording 6 for 157.

When play began, it was a sweltering 37 degrees, but an aggressive Kurtis Patterson, who hit 55, raised the temperature to start the Scorchers’ home opener, while the Heat remained winless after two games.

The Scorchers have a home game against the Hobart Hurricanes on December 20 but are expecting to be on the road for a long time after that due to Western Australia’s tight border controls.

Patterson is an underappreciated cricketer in Australia. He did have a 144 Test average, but from only two matches. The 28-year-old previously looked poised for a long Test career, but he lit up Optus Stadium with his first BBL half-century on Ashes opening day.

The Scorchers’ top order was in doubt after powerful English batsmen Jason Roy and Liam Livingstone did not return after shining last season. After the early wicket of Colin Munro, Patterson proved to be a capable replacement with an onslaught at No.3.

Patterson was unable to get into the Scorchers’ formidable batting lineup last season, and he only appeared in one game. But, in contrast to his usual conservative approach, he made the most of his early opportunity with a powerful display. He liked the fast pitch and bright outfield, which reminded him of the neighboring WACA. And was aided by short-pitched bowling from an overzealous Heat attack.
Patterson hammered 20 runs in four balls during Liam Guthrie’s third over. Hitting the short leg-side boundary for the pyrotechnics many thought he lacked.

It was all the more impressive considering Patterson, Munro. And Laurie Evans was only reunited with their teammates on game day after being quarantined in Sydney.

Kelly makes a great case

Jhye Richardson, the Scorchers’ spearhead, is projected to miss the majority of the BBL. But the Scorchers have exceptional pack supplies. Matt Kelly, who last season was unable to break into the pace trio of Richardson, Jason Behrendorff, and Andrew Tye. Made the most of his opportunity with an eye-catching early surge.

He got lucky with his first wicket when Max Bryant was caught at mid-off. But his dismissal of Ben Duckett was top-notch – a blistering yorker that knocked over leg stump.

Kelly faces a difficult battle in keeping his spot with England. Tymal Mills is expected to be ready soon, while Lance Morris, who can bowl over 90 mph, is close behind.

He finished with two late wickets to top off an outstanding effort. And firmly establish his place in the team for the time being.
