Matthew Hayden: Matthew Hayden, along with the others in the group – Saqlain Mushtaq and Vernon Philander – was integrated into Pakistan’s coaching set up only a month before the T20 World Cup, with the responsibility of getting a hurt unit to overcome the biggest obstacle in T20 Internationals, and win the tournament.
He, on the other hand, finds himself in a position identical to that of his longtime opening partner Justin Langer. When they face off in the semifinal on Thursday, neither can win the game for the teams they are working within the ongoing competition.
In a short period of time, he has had excellent success, with Pakistan outperforming all five of their opponents in the Super 12 phase, extending their winning streak in the UAE to 16 games.
The greatest openers on display have been Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, while the bowling attack has also been the most productive so far in the competition. Shoaib Malik and Asif Ali have both contributed to Pakistan’s success in recent matches, and the team appears to be well-oiled at the moment.
Fakhar Zaman, on the other hand, is yet to score. Despite a few breezy warm-up performances against West Indies (24-ball 46*) and South Africa (28-ball 52 retd.) in the warm-ups, he has found the slow nature of wickets in the main competition to be too much for him.
He has 54 runs in 60 balls in four innings thus far. Hayden, on the other hand, is unconcerned about Fakhar’s form, believing that the southpaw contributes more to the club than just his batting.
Hayden said on Wednesday:
“Fakhar is a very interesting personality and character. And the longer that I spend time with him, the more that I really enjoy his personality and character,”
“The fact that he was in the Navy for seven years gives you a pretty strong indication of his ability. To be able to fight and fight hard.
“Not only just from a batting perspective but the contributions within a T20 setup. Is that you have to be as a general policy a two-dimensional player. And Fakhar has been the standout outfielder for our team, as well. He saves literally five to ten runs every game. And five to ten runs within a T20 concept and batting lineup. Including your own runs maybe 20s and 30s here and there. Which means that overall he’s just been such an important part of the side.”

He believes that the task Pakistani batters have is in the nets. Against a high-quality pace attack in their squad and traveling reserves. Will enable them to deal with Australia and Co. on Thursday.
