WI vs IND: Rohit Sharma explains why India is experimenting with different openers in T20Is. Suryakumar Yadav was used as an opener in India’s first two T20Is against WI.

On Monday, August 1. the West Indies and India faced off in the second Twenty20 International at Warner Park in St Kitts. West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran won the toss and chose to bat first. India made one substitution, with fast bowler Avesh Khan replacing spinner Ravi Bishnoi.

This year, India has tried a number of different opening-innings combinations. Particularly in the absence of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. In terms of batting position changes, Rohit stated ahead of the game that the team wants the batters to bat in any order and be versatile with the lineup.

“We want the guys to be able to bat anywhere and not in specific positions,” Rohit said before the toss. “We want the guys to be flexible; there are two approaches depending on the players,” he added.

Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav are back in business.

Rahul, one of India’s regular openers across formats. Out of the team since before the start of the home T20I series against SA in June due to injury. In the T20I series against England in July. Rohit and Rishabh Pant opened together, and Suryakumar Yadav batted in the middle order.

However, Rohit opened alongside Suryakumar in the first T20I against the West Indies. India has stuck with the pairing for the second T20I. The opening stand put on 44 runs in the first match before Suryakumar dismissed for 24 runs off 16 balls in the fifth over. Rohit, on the other hand, was the leading run-scorer, scoring 64 runs off 44 balls.

Dinesh Karthik scored an unbeaten 41 runs off 19 balls in the final overs of the innings to help India reach 190 for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. West Indies, facing a difficult chase, got off to a slow start, scoring 42 runs for the loss of three wickets in the powerplay.\]

None of the Windies batters scored more than 20, resulting in a total of 122 for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs. And Karthik was named Player of the Match for his batting performance.
