Marnus Labuschagne: Following his sixth century in 19 games, he now holds the highest average of all male Test players, trailing only Bradman.
Over the years, a number of players have been dubbed the “greatest since Bradman.” By one metric, that honor now belongs to Marnus Labuschagne, who set up Australia’s dominant position in Adelaide with his maiden Ashes century.
Labuschagne presently boasts the second-highest average of all-male Test cricketers (with a 20-innings cut-off), trailing only the immortal 99.94.

In an all-Australia top four, he went up two positions during this innings, with Adam Voges’ brief but prolific career placing him at No. 3 and Steven Smith, whose average has previously peaked at 64.81, in fourth. Since his recall in the 2019 Ashes, he has a batting average of 102.00 in the first innings of Tests.
Marnus Labuschagne responded:
“That’s the first I’ve heard of it.” “It’s a unique sensation, but Bradman is gone. And a few nicks send you back down the pecking order.
“It’s impossible to think like that. I only focus on scoring as many runs as possible. In each innings to put us in a position to win games. Individual accomplishments and awards are good, but winning games is by far the most gratifying aspect.”
He had to work hard for each of his 103 runs, as Jos Buttler dropped him twice, on 21 and 95.
On the second morning, before a controlled edge wide of second slip hit the boundary. He needed five more for three figures. It was Australia’s slowest Test century since Jason Gillespie’s memorable nightwatchman performance against Bangladesh in 2006. It came off 287 balls.
You wondered if he’d turn it into a monster century when he was granted another life by Ollie Robinson’s no-ball as he edged to Buttler. But Robinson trapped him lbw without offering a shot, which was surprising given how effectively he’d left during his innings.
Labuschagne said:
“I think it’s always been a part of my game, leaving the ball and making decisions off stump. I felt I left the ball very nicely for the majority of this innings. It was one of those wickets where you constantly felt like you were grinding away, and I never felt like I was in. I never felt like any of the runs I did were simple.”
While the century boosted his career total, it also added to a stellar record against the pink-ball. Which has seen him score three hundred with an average of 84.57. But he insisted that it is a more difficult version of the Test game for batsmen.
