Former captain Dean Elgar accuses Cricket South Africa of back stabbing

Former captain Dean Elgar accuses Cricket South Africa of back stabbing. Elgar led South Africa in 18 Tests and captained against India in his last Test.

Dean Elgar, a former South African Test captain, addressed the harsh truth of political and administrative goals that harm team culture and the environment. Not only that, but as Elgar stated, this resulted in his unceremonious dismissal as captain in the game’s purest form.

While describing the difficulties he faced in rebuilding the team. Elgar express his feelings of being “stabbed in the back” by CSA administration and current head coach, Shukri Conrad. Notably, the 36-year-old ended his international cricket career in January and signed a lucrative three-year contract with the English county Essex. Furthermore, reflecting on his Test career, he accused Sh of cutting it short. Simply because he felt more at ease conversing and planning with the then-South African captain, Temba Bavuma.

Dean Elgar, on the other hand, did not mince words when he stated that despite all odds. He had friendly connections with his old colleagues, including Bavuma. Furthermore, the former Protea skipper stated that when he took over as Test captain for the ‘Rainbow Nation’ in March 2021. He was exposed to a pretty ‘toxic culture’.

“I became a part-time cricketer and full-time politician. Which is something I would never want to do again. I am a sportsman, not a politician or a cricket administrator. I thrust into a situation in which I need to be all three. “If I had known that beforehand, I would never have accepted the captaincy,” Elgar told Rapport Newspaper.

“It felt as though they did not recognise all my hard work over the previous year-and-a-half, that they didn’t realise how much we had improved as a team,” the 36-year-old said.

We became a team with the potential to play in the World Test Championship final: Elgar

Continuing the topic, Dean Elgar recounted how he fought hard to get South Africa’s Test squad to the World Test Championship final after starting as a low-ranked team. Furthermore, he recalls the moment when previous legend Graeme Smith quit as Director of Cricket in 2022. Leaving him with the added weight of getting South African cricket back on track alongside then-coach Mark Boucher and the team management.

“From being sixth or seventh in the world, we developed into a team capable of competing in the World Test Championship Final. I tried to make the best of a bad situation, to control what I could. But my form deteriorated,” Elgar concluded.
