Joe Root surpasses Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar for massive feat in Test cricket: Ashes

Joe Root pushed past India icons Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar on Day 3 of the second Ashes Test for an incredible Test accomplishment.

On Saturday, England captain Joe Root maintained his remarkable year with the bat in Tests, eclipsing India’s legendary batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar for a momentous achievement. Root, who is playing in the second Ashes Test in Adelaide, shattered their respective records on Day 3 of the pink-ball match.

The England Test skipper had earlier eclipsed Michael Vaughan’s record of 1,481 runs in the longest format in a calendar year, which he set in 2002. On the third day, the English batter broke Sunil Gavaskar’s (1,555 runs in 1979) and Sachin Tendulkar’s records (1,562 runs in 2010).

In addition to breaking the English record, he went past former Australia captain Ricky Ponting. Former Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara, and current Australia head coach Justin Langer’s. Maximum runs in a calendar year during his second innings against Australia in the first Test.

This year, the English batsman has been in outstanding form, scoring the most runs. In the four-match Test series against India in India (where he also made a double-century). And repeating the feat in the home series in August-September. In Tests in 2021, he has six hundred (including two double-tones) and an average of 65.

Mohammad Yousuf of Pakistan now holds the record for most Test runs. In a calendar year (1,788 runs in 11 matches; 2006), followed by Vivian Richards of the West Indies (1,710 in 11 matches; 1976).

Joe Root has a maximum of three innings available for the rest of the year to beat Yousuf’s record. Following the second Test, England will face Australia in Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test. Which will take place between the 26th and 30th of December.

The visitors are currently 0-1 in the five-match series after losing by nine wickets in the first encounter in Brisbane.
