Pat Cummins was out of the second Test after Covid closed contact

Pat Cummins: Australia will be led by Steven Smith, with Michael Neser making his Test debut. After being deemed a close contact of a Covid-19 case at a restaurant on Wednesday night, Australia captain Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the second Test in Adelaide. The team will be led by Steven Smith in the day-night competition.

Pat Cummins was dining with his brother and Adelaide Strikers’ bowler Harry Conway at an Adelaide restaurant when a patron at an adjacent table was recognized as a Covid positive case

According to reports in Nine tabloids. Cummins exited the restaurant right away and alerted authorities. He has since had a negative PCR test, but he must still isolate for seven days.

Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon were at the same restaurant as Cummins, but at a separate outdoor table, according to Cricket Australia. They are considered casual contacts by South Australian Health, and they are free to play.

For the first two games of the series in Brisbane and Adelaide, players were not in strict bubbles, and Cummins did not break any protocols.

CA and health officials talked all night, but there was no way Cummins could be cleared for the game.

Pat Cummins tweeted:

Gutted to miss this Test but really excited to see Neser finally get his chance in the baggy green. He has done the hard yards and is a seriously skillful player. Super frustrating but COVID has thrown us all some curve balls over the last couple of years. Will be cheering along!

Hockley said he was confident with the protocols in place for this Test in terms of what players are allowed to do, but that they are constantly being evaluated and will likely be tighter in Melbourne and Sydney, where there are more cases.

As Cummins’ substitute, Michael Neser will make his Test debut, while Travis Head has been selected vice-captain. It’s a remarkable comeback to captaincy for Smith, who was named Cummins’ deputy following Tim Paine’s retirement last month.

A fully vaccinated close contact of a Covid positive patient must be tested immediately and isolated for seven days, as well as undergo tests on days 6 and 13 after the encounter, according to South Australian health laws.

Pat Cummins is expected to be available for the third Test, which begins on Boxing Day in Melbourne

Casual contacts only need to be isolated until an initial negative test is returned. They must, however, undergo additional testing on days 6 and 13 and wear a surgical mask at all other times.

Following the opening of the state boundary, there has been an increase in Covid cases in South Australia in recent weeks. Depending on where they are coming from, travelers entering South Australia must undergo a variety of tests.

Anyone who is forced to take a test immediately upon arrival is not compelled to isolate while awaiting the results.
