Alastair Cook commits until 2023 season after Essex contract extension

Alastair Cook after signing a new two-year contract with Essex, Alastair Cook will continue to play county cricket at the age of 38.

Cook, England’s all-time leading run-scorer in Test cricket and a former captain, retired from international cricket in 2018 and signed a three-year contract with Essex, where he was a key player in the county’s back-to-back red-ball titles in 2019 and 2020, the County Championship and the Bob Willis Trophy.

Cook had played down the possibility of retiring at the start of the 2021 season. But Essex had their most turbulent summer in recent memory, failing to qualify for Division One of the Championship. And reports late in the season suggested that he was considering retiring after a disagreement with Ronnie Irani. A member of their board of directors and chair of their cricket committee.

And the hiring of John Stephenson as chief executive. With Essex confirming on Tuesday that he had signed a contract for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

“Since my international retirement, I’ve really loved my cricket here at Essex,” Cook stated. “We’re fortunate to have a good dressing room. And a fantastic coaching team, lead by Anthony McGrath, and I’m looking forward to another successful couple of years.”

After a successful Royal London Cup season in 2021, McGrath, the club’s head coach, stated that Cook was “still one of the top batters in the world” and that he will remain a major part of their ambitions in 50-over cricket.

McGrath said:

“It’s fantastic news that Cooky has committed his future to the club.” “Alastair is still one of the best batters in the world, and he’s crucial to our success on and off the field.” In both red-ball and white-ball cricket, he has the power to take the game away from the opposition, which is something that every head coach desires in their team.

“He’s also a terrific role model for the younger kids coming through. And he has a lot of information that all of our players. Including the senior pros, benefit from time to time.”

Cook has made 2237 first-class runs at an average of 45.65 since retiring from international cricket. Though he had a quiet summer in 2021 by his own standards. Scoring 611 Championship runs at 32.15 with only four scores of 50 or more.
