Jos Buttler wants to be fearless in Ashes: ‘I feel like I have nothing to lose’

Jos Buttler has never played a first-class match in Australia, let alone a Test, and the final week of preparation building up to the Ashes opener in Brisbane looks certain to be delayed by the weather, but he is determined to go into the series unburdened by factors he can’t control.

The weather is interfering with preparations, and there are concerns about Covid-19, but the attention is on the Gabba.

Jos Buttler is part of the second group of England players who have now rejoined the full squad followed their quarantine following the T20 World Cup

But they were caught in torrential rain on their way from their Gold Coast camp to Brisbane, which forced them to cancel the first day of their final warm-up match.

With the weather prediction looking bad, there’s a good chance England won’t receive any quality middle time in the coming days. Last week’s intrasquad encounter had only 29 overs on the first day.

Australia is in a similar situation, with their three-match series set to be canceled – and having to deal with the off-field controversy surrounding Tim Paine’s resignation – despite the fact that several of their players have been playing in the Sheffield Shield for the past two months.

Buttler missed England’s most recent Test, against India at The Oval, owing to paternity leave, but was set to return for the Old Trafford match, which was postponed due to Covid-19 fears.

Overall, Buttler had a fractured domestic season with little Test success, missing the New Zealand series due to the IPL and then scoring 72 runs in five innings against India, but he is ready to take on the task in Australia.

“To be honest, I feel like I have nothing to lose,” he remarked. “That [year] that passed has been a bit fragmented. There was some good form and some awful form last year, as well. It’ll be my first time seeing an Ashes series [in Australia], so I’m looking forward to all the challenges it will bring. I’m looking forward to experiencing it all, the good, terrible, and, no doubt, the highs, and lows along the way.

“Right now, as a player, I’m trying to bring a fearless approach and genuinely embrace the chance.” That’s going to be very good when I get to someplace near my best.”

There could be more complications in the way of the series, as there always are in today’s world.

Following the discovery of the Omicron variant in incoming passengers in New South Wales. It remains to be observed whether Covid-19 processes will need to be tightened. As well as the impact any prospective adjustments to international border restrictions may have on families.
