KS Bharat to keep wicket on Day 5 in Wriddhiman Saha’s absence: IND vs NZ 1st Test

KS Bharat substitute wicketkeeper in the absence of Wriddhiman Saha has taken over the gloves, much as he did on Day 3 of the first Test.

Due to Wriddhiman Saha’s absence on Day 5 of the 1st India-New Zealand Test match, India’s substitute wicketkeeper KS Bharat has returned to the field. Saha has been unable to put on the gloves due to stiffness in his neck, same as he was on Day 3.

On Monday, BCCI tweeted from its official account to confirm the news, saying:

Wriddhiman Saha felt stiffness in his neck while keeping in the second innings. It was affecting his movement while wicket-keeping. KS Bharat will keep wickets in his absence on Day 5.

On Day 2, during New Zealand’s first innings, Wriddhiman Saha kept wickets for 55 overs and complained about the same problem. The reason was revealed in a tweet sent out by BCCI on the morning of Day 3.

On Day 4, Saha batted brilliantly to help India set a challenging goal for New Zealand. Despite being in excruciating discomfort and receiving on-field treatment from the team physio, the Bengal stumper smashed 61 off 126 balls.

He and Shreyas Iyer put on a 64-run sixth-wicket stand to help India recover from 103/6.

After Iyer was dismissed at the stroke of Tea, Saha and Axar Patel put on 67 for the 7th wicket before stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane concluded India’s innings at 234/7, setting a challenging target of 284 for the Black Caps.

The Kiwis were 4/1 at the end of the day, thanks to Ashwin’s wicket of Will Young.

Meanwhile, Bharat, who was born in Andhra Pradesh, was sensational in the first innings. He was responsible for three crucial dismissals and was instrumental in India’s first-innings comeback.

First, he grabbed a superb catch off Ashwin’s bowling to dismiss Will Young. Then, by making another great catch, he assisted Axar Patel in getting rid of Ross Talyor. Finally, he got Tom Latham out on 95 thanks to a great stumping.
