Travis Head determined not to let the latest chance pass him by

Travis Head return to Australia’s Test team is proving to be a comfortable and relaxing experience, thanks to familiar faces and a well-known opponent. Prior to the Ashes, the left-hander was selected for Australia’s final batting spot.

Head believes he is in a good attitude heading into the Ashes opener in Brisbane

Rather than feeling pressured to perform following his dismissal midway through last summer’s series against India.

With new skipper Pat Cummins revealing on Sunday that Head had won the contest to be Australia’s No. 5 ahead of Usman Khawaja, he has already been given certainty.

Getting back into the Australian squad, with or without that early selection call, was a liberating experience for Head, especially after being a part of the victorious 2019 Ashes tour in England.

“It’s wonderful to be back.” Obviously, we haven’t played much in the last few months, but that 2019 series was probably the most enjoyable I’ve ever had playing cricket,” Head remarked. “Three or four months in England as an A squad, preparing for an Ashes series and the build-up.”

“I believe it’s simply more relaxing to be in the same atmosphere, with familiar faces, and the same banter and enjoyment that we have as a group.” So far, I’ve been having a great time at camp, and I’m hoping to carry that enthusiasm into the way we play as a group over the next two months.”

Travis, who averages 39.75 in 19 Tests and has two hundred and seven fifties, has been chastised for losing his wicket on vital occasions or when he appeared to be well placed.

Head said he wasn’t told to change much about his game after his Text suspension. But he comes into the series with Sheffield Shield scores of 163 and 55 this season. And a scorching 230 off 127 in the local one-day competition.

Head also doesn’t believe that coming in ahead of inexperienced allrounder Cameron Green. And Test rookie Alex Carey in Australia’s batting order places any more stress on his shoulders.

Travis Head said:

“When you look at how great Greeny has played throughout time. I think he’s just waiting to break out and make enormous runs,”

“Alex is exactly the same. He’s playing a lot of international cricket and will know what to anticipate from one day. And Twenty20 cricket in this environment.

“Obviously, Test cricket is a different animal…he understands the stakes.” I have faith in the guys behind me and in the guys ahead of me; all I have to do now is make sure I’m doing my job.”

On Monday, both teams enjoyed their final training session at the Gabba. As well as a look at the first Test pitch just two days before the series begins in Brisbane on Wednesday.
