Navjot Singh Sidhu, a former Indian opener, is expected to return for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season after a ten-year hiatus to pursue politics.

Star Sports has brought in Sidhu, who is renowned for his hilarious “Sidhuisms” and perceptive commentary, to add his signature touch.

After retiring, Sidhu went straight into commentary in the late 1990s and became an instant success. His distinct way of speaking and thorough knowledge of the game rapidly made him a fan favorite.

“I left cricket to work in commentary, and I wasn’t sure if I could do it. Wasn’t particularly confident (at first), but 10-15 days into the World Cup, the name Sidhuism came up. I am walking in a lane where no one was walking. Deccan Herald cited Sidhu as saying, “It was the lane of Sidhuism.”

He had an impact during India’s World Cup campaigns and the early years of the IPL. However, in 2004, he entered politics with the BJP and stepped away from the microphone, eventually winning the Amritsar seat until 2014.

‘Cricket is my first love’ – Navjot Singh Sidhu

Sidhu, 60, is overjoy to be back in the cricket commentary booth. “Boss, cricket was my first love. Nothing beats having your hobby turn into a career. “A duckling never forgets how to swim, and I’ll take to commentary like a fish to water,” he remarked.

Sidhu believes that the IPL would be helpful in forming the T20 World Cup lineups. “The IPL will establish the tone for the World Cup. There is no other cricket action. The world’s attention is focuse on IPL. This is where you can secure a spot in the T20 World Cup, not just for Indians, but also for foreign players.”

Speaking of two of India’s top batters, he remarked, “I would rate Kohli as the greatest Indian batsman for the simple fact that he is becoming fitter with age, just like old wine. They are both excellent players. I’m not sure about Rohit’s fitness. “As you get older, your reflexes tend to slow down,” he noted.

While money was never the primary motive, Sidhu recognized the bargains pundits can make. “From Rs 60-70 lakh for the entire competition, I was earning Rs 25 lakh each day in the IPL. The satisfaction was not with the money, but with how quickly time passed. “It was beautiful,” he said.
