India won the five-match Test series against England with remarkable ease. The new Test cricket incentive programme from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been the subject of discussions in the meantime. Players who participate in more than 3/4 of the games in a season will receive a match fee of INR 45 lakh per game, per the “Test Cricket Incentive Scheme.”

The importance of this conversation has also been underline by Indian head coach Rahul Dravid. He explain that this tactic should not be interpret as an invitation. Rather as a legitimate recognition of the difficult tasks required to prevail in the longest format of the game.

Recently, BCCI announced the central contracts for the players for the 2023-24 season. The list saw some surprising exclusions in the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan who had declined from participating in domestic cricket. Chief Secretary Jay Shah introduced a groundbreaking incentive programme designed to stimulate player engagement in the format.

In a similar spirit, Dravid discussed his thoughts on the new incentive programme following India’s triumph over England in the Dharamsala Test. “Hopefully, playing Test cricket is not motivate by money. It’s just an acknowledgment that the format is challenging. You endure a great deal. Unlike tests, we don’t commemorate 100 T20Is, do we? It’s a reward, not an incentive, he declared.
