Ben Stokes says ‘If we don’t believe, we’re beaten already’

Ben Stokes argues that if England doesn’t believe they can rescue the Adelaide Test and alter their fortunes in the Ashes, “we’re beaten already,” after another harrowing day with bat and ball in the second Test.

After a passionate display characterized by long periods of short-pitched bowling, Stokes claimed three wickets.

After a spirited showing with the ball, Stokes finished with figures of 3 for 113, highlighted by lengthy intervals of short-pitched bowling, most notably against Australia’s centurion Marnus Labuschagne.

Meanwhile, England struggled to 17 for 2 under the floodlights in reply to Australia’s 473 for 9, before a lightning strike behind the bowler’s elbow forced an early end to the second day’s play, his primary role may yet be to come with the bat.

Ben Stokes remarked afterward:

“It’s been a terrible two days.” “We spent a lot of time out on the field, putting some miles on our legs, but it was good to get off and watch the boys bat in the end.

“Obviously, we came off in unusual circumstances – I’m not sure I’ve ever been a part of a game being called off early due to lightning – but we get to play tomorrow in natural light, which appears to be the simplest and best time to be in the middle.

Despite England’s long slog through 150.4 overs of bowling, Stokes said that he had enjoyed the battle as he makes his return to Test cricket after a protracted hiatus last summer, during which he believed he would never play at the highest level again.

After his tireless attempts with the ball, Stokes had every right to be sore. He only lasted 12 overs in Brisbane last week after injuring his knee while fielding. But, after being convinced that no long-term harm has occurred, he has pushed himself through the discomfort in this Test, bowling a total of 25 overs to finish as England’s most successful wicket-taker in an exhausting inning.

England’s only true 90mph option in the team, with a sustained stretch of short-pitched bowling, aimed to irritate Australia’s batters.

The strategy paid off on the first day when David Warner was bowled for 95 after slicing a short ball to cover, and Stokes believed it may have also played a role in Cameron Green’s dismissal on the second day when he failed to get completely forward to the full-length delivery that bowled him for 2.

If England is to claw their way back into the game. A lot will be riding on Joe Root and Dawid Malan. Whose century stand in Brisbane was their best batting performance on the tour so far.

After scores of 5 and 14 in the first Test, his first competitive game in six months. After missing England’s summer Test series against New Zealand. And India due to a broken finger, Stokes believes he will play a significant role at No. 5.

Ben Stokes went on to say that he and his teammates were aware of the importance of putting up. Better performance for the benefit of England’s fans, both at home and in Australia.

He did, however, stress that the awful events in Tasmania on Thursday. In which five children died after a bouncy castle broke its moorings in high winds. And for which Australia’s players wore black armbands, “puts a lot of things into perspective.”
