Chris Gayle farewell on the cards with Jamaica set to host the West Indies-Ireland series

Chris Gayle confirmed after West Indies’ exit in the T20 World Cup that he had played his last game in a major tournament but revealed his hope that CWI would “give me one game in Jamaica to go in front of my home crowd… then I can say ‘hey guys, thank you so much.”

Three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and a one-off Twenty20 International (T20I) will be played at Sabina Park.

Chris Gayle will not be part of the ODI squad, the one-off match at Sabina Park might serve as his farewell game

As the series counts towards Super League qualification for the 2023 World Cup.

We gather that a decision on Gayle’s inclusion has yet to be made, but that the matter will be discussed at CWI’s board of directors’ next meeting later this month.

“It’s whether we all feel it’s acceptable for him to have one final game at home to say farewell in a one-off game,” CWI CEO Johnny Grave told the Mason and Guest radio show in Barbados last month. “That Ireland series would give us that chance.”

“It would absolutely be acceptable, in my opinion, to treat our players well and allow them to retire. Especially players like Chris who have had incredible careers and won championships for the West Indies.”

Ireland will depart for the Caribbean on December 31. Immediately following their two-T20I and three-ODI series against the United States, which begins on December 22. They’ve already named their squads for both trips, with Kevin O’Brien missing out. And interim head coach David Ripley taking over.

Ireland last visited the Caribbean in 2020, drawing 1-1 in T20Is and losing 3-0 in ODIs. Sabina Park also hosted one of the greatest moments in Irish cricket history. The 2007 World Cup victory against Pakistan on St Patrick’s Day.

Cricket Ireland’s performance director, Richard Holdsworth, said:

“We are delighted to be returning to the Caribbean, where we have so many fond memories,”

“The World Cup Super League is a key set of matches for Ireland as we try to qualify for the next Cricket World Cup. And we expect a highly competitive series in January if the series in 2020 is any indication.”
