‘We were trying to give other batters an opportunity, which cost us today,’ Harmanpreet Kaur explains why India lost against Pakistan. India Women were unable to chase down a 138-run mark against their opponents in the Asia Cup 2022 match on Friday.
On Friday, India Women were defeated by Pakistan Women by a score of 13 runs in their fourth encounter in the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 competition. While bowling first, the Indian bowlers did a decent job of restricting Pakistan to 137/6, but the batters failed to chase the score and were bowled out for 124 runs in 19.4 overs at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
After experimenting with different combinations in the previous two matches against Malaysia and the UAE, the Indian management fielded a formidable eleven. In the previous two matches, the Indian hitters managed to score 181 and 178 runs when batting first. As a result, Pakistani captain Bismah Maroof chose to bat first in the high-stakes match.
India lost opener S Meghana and Jemimah Rodrigues within powerplay overs while chasing an easy 138-run mark. The greatest partnership for India came for the sixth wicket, when in-form all-rounder Deepti Sharma and captain Harmanpreet Kaur avoided a collapse. However, the Indian batsmen continued to lose wickets while attempting to hit huge strokes.

Richa Ghosh, the wicketkeeper-batter, stepped in after six wickets had been lost and hit 26 runs off 13 balls with three sixes to keep India’s hopes alive to the finish, but it was not enough. Harmanpreet, who batted at number seven against Pakistan, remarked that the management planned to give other batters in the middle order an opportunity.
“In the middle, we were trying to give the chance to other batters, which cost us today. Because you have to do that as the tournament goes on, but it backfired. It was a chaseable target. In the middle overs, we were not able to take singles and rotate strike, we played too many dot balls.”

India will play Bangladesh Women, who defeated them in the final of the last edition of the event in 2018, with less than 24 hours to prepare. The Indian management is unlikely to repeat the error of shifting batters’ places in the middle order against Bangladesh. Harmanpreet also emphasized that they will not take Bangladesh or any other team lightly.
“We are aware of that and never take any team lightly. It is a part of the game. Yesterday, Thailand played a good game. Today, they (Pakistan) played good cricket, and they came up trumps and deserved to win it. Going forward, we need to work on those areas and be strong.”
