When India captain Hardik Pandya announced the changes to the playing XI, the crowd at the Malahide Cricket Club in Dublin erupted at Samson’s inclusion. He and Deepak Hooda put together India’s highest-ever T20I partnership, stitching 176 runs in just 87 deliveries.
Hooda made his first international century, scoring 104 off 57 balls.
Their partnership was also the largest for the second wicket and the ninth-highest in men’s T20Is overall.
Ireland almost pulled off an incredible victory in response, but fell four runs short in a last-ball thriller.
Skipper Andy Balbrinie (60) and Paul Stirling (40) got the hosts off to a fast start.
Ireland’s innings was then boosted by Harry Tector (39) and George Dockrell (34) before Mark Adair’s 12-ball 23-ball cameo pushed the hosts closer to the target.
Umran Malik, on the other hand, defended 8 runs off three balls in the final over to secure India’s victory.
