Mahela Jayawardene has been appointed consultant coach of the Sri Lanka men’s senior team, as well as the men’s Under-19 and Sri Lanka A teams. The current contract is for a year, and the former captain will also provide “strategic support” at SLC’s high-performance center. For a one-year term beginning January 1, 2022.
According to a press release from Sri Lanka Cricket, the former captain “would be in charge of the entire cricketing element of the national teams” as well as providing “strategic support” to players and management teams at the high-performance centre.
Following consultations with the SLC’s executive committee and technical advisory committee, the appointment was made.
Jayawardene previously served as a consultant for the Sri Lanka men’s senior team during the first round of the T20 World Cup, which was held in the UAE and Oman in October and November of this year.
He was also working as a consultant and mentor for the Under-19 team at the time, which was preparing for the World Cup in the Caribbean next year.
Mahela Jayawardene said in the statement:
“This is an exciting opportunity to work with the national cricketers and coaches in our various development squads. Including the U19 and A teams, to help us do justice to the enormous cricketing talent and potential in Sri Lanka,”
“I am very passionate about Sri Lankan cricket and believe that with a coordinated and focused team effort. Taking a holistic approach working across all age groups, we can achieve consistent success in the future.
“My main role will be supporting our team of national coaches. And support staff in terms of our preparation and strategic thinking during the coming year.”

The SLC’s technical advisory group, led by Aravinda de Silva. Is expected to not only name a new set of coaches but also make modifications to the coaching structure. The men’s team’s next international match is in Australia on February 11, when they play T20Is.
Jayawardene, on the other hand, will have to juggle this commitment. With two other high-profile coaching jobs, as head coach of the Mumbai Indians. And the Southern Brave in the IPL and the Hundred, respectively.
Jayawardene is recognized as one of Sri Lanka’s best batsmen. As well is one of the best captains the country has ever had. And has been renowned for his tactical genius for decades.
