IPL Retention: Prior to the IPL super auction, a lot of top cricketers have been released by their respective franchises. During the IPL retentions on Tuesday, the existing eight clubs kept a total of 27 cricketers, including eight abroad and four uncapped players.
However, a lot of elite cricketers have been released by their franchises. This can be beneficial or detrimental to the players, as they can be selected by one of the two new franchises prior to the auction, or they can return to the auction pool and compete for a greater or lower price.
IPL Retention List
Mumbai Indians (Mumbai Indians): Every year when IPL retention takes place before the major auction, MI has the most difficult options to make, and this year was no exception.
MI, the IPL’s most successful club (with five titles), has kept Rohit Sharma (Rs 16 crore), Jasprit Bumrah (Rs 12 crore), Suryakumar Yadav (Rs 8 crore), and Kieron Pollard (Rs 6 crore), but had to let go of Ishan Kishan, Trent Boult, Hardik Pandya, and Krunal Pandya.

Chennai Super Kings: Four-time champions kept Ravindra Jadeja (Rs 16 crore), MS Dhoni (Rs 12 crore), Moeen Ali (Rs 8 crore), and Ruturaj Gaikwad (Rs 6 crore), but Suresh Raina, Faf du Plessis, and Dwayne Bravo were left out. Bravo and Raina, in particular, have been a vital part of the CSK set-up for quite some time, but it looks that the franchise has decided to move to the future.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore: After AB de Villiers announced his retirement from the IPL, RCB didn’t have many difficult decisions to make. However, the choice to keep just Mohammed Siraj and not Harshal Patel, who had the purple cap last season, raised some questions. Yuzvendra Chahal, the leg-spinner, was also left out.

Kolkata Knight Riders: The two-time IPL champions went with their tried-and-true Caribbean duo of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. There was a lot of reliance placed on young guns Varun Chakaravarthy and Venkatesh Iyer, hence Shubman Gill was left out.

The Delhi Capitals: were the only team who could equal MI’s headache on retention day. The Delhi franchise had a lot of options, but they could only keep Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw, and Anrich Nortje due to the four retentions allowed.

Rajasthan Royals: They were largely reliant on their international battery, which made it tough to keep the core together, as IPL retention rules only allowed two foreign newcomers. Sanju Samson and Jos Buttler were chosen by RR, while uncapped Yashasvi Jaiswal was a surprising selection.

SunRisers Hyderabad: They haven’t had the best of luck in the IPL, and their retention policy reflects that. Even still, allowing Rashid Khan to join the auction pool was unexpected. SRH kept Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, and Umran Malik, two uncapped cricketers.
