Veerasammy Permaul the West Indies bowler sparkled with a five-wicket haul as they skittled Sri Lanka for 204 and finished the day on 69/1 before rain stopped play in Galle.
To begin, the West Indies went with spin at both ends, with Jomel Warrican’s left-arm orthodox paired with Roston Chase’s off-breaks.
As runs poured early, Pathum Nissanka and Oshada Fernando continued where they left off yesterday, albeit their morning intentions backfired, with Fernando edging to ‘keeper Joshua da Silva for 18.
Angelo Mathews joined Nissanka, but their hopes of forming a solid combination were dashed in just seven overs. Due to a twin strike from Veerasammy Permaul in his first over. Dhananjaya de Silva was penalized for being in two minds, edging to the man with the gloves for only two.
The double-blow posed a threat to Sri Lanka, which was exacerbated. When Mathews walked off the ground after scoring a single.
Sri Lanka’s spinners continued to confound them, with debutant Charith Asalanka (10) being undone by Permaul, whose questions went unanswered.
Not to be outdone, Warrican responded with two more dismissals in as many overs. Dismissing Dinesh Chandimal (2) and Ramesh Mendis (5) in quick succession.
Permaul then took the wickets of Embuldeniya and Lakmal to complete his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket. West Indies would finish things up quickly, as Mathews (29) would be the last player to be dismissed. As Warrican rejoiced over the scalp, it was spin that did the harm.
On 2/0, the West Indies went to lunch.

In the second session, the openers — Kraigg Brathwaite and Jermaine Blackwood – would bat wisely assessing the deliveries on their merits
They also appear to be at ease against the Sri Lankan spinners. Which is a significant improvement over their performance in the first match.
When Praveen Jayawickrama struck first for the Lankans, Blackwood was approaching his half-century. In addition, a delivery pitched on the middle and leg would straighten enough to trap Blackwood. Who would then review unsuccessfully, ending his 44-run innings.
Therefore, with the West Indies’ score at 69/1, the heavens would open in Galle, causing a delay in the match.
Rain would continue to fall for the rest of the day, preventing any further play. The visitors, on the other hand, will be pleased with their performance on the day. Which included a fantastic fielding performance and a consistent batting performance as they trail the hosts by 135 runs.
