Ricky Ponting gives Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne vital advise. Marnus Labuschagne scored 13 runs in two innings, whilst Travis Head scored 66 runs in the first Ashes 2023 Test.
The Ashes 2023 began in spectacular manner for Australia’s Pat Cummins-led team. In the first Test of the series against England at Edgbaston, Australia won by a slim two-wicket margin, thanks to Cummins’ heroics with the bat during the run chase.
However, the performances of Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head across the two innings were concerning for Australia. Despite being the world’s third and fourth best Test batsmen, respectively, neither could have an effect on the game.
Head scored 66 runs in two innings, whereas Labuschagne scored 13 runs in two innings. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting stepped up to offer advice to the batters, knowing they were eager to improve in the upcoming contests. Concerning Labuschagne, Ponting believes he is overcomplicating things and should return to basics.
“I’ll wait for them to approach me and ask.” It’s not my place, I’m not one of the coaches, I’m just a past player sitting back and analysing what a lot of these guys are doing, but I’d like to catch up with him and have a chat about his batting, because from what I’ve seen over the last couple of weeks, I think he’s overcomplicating things a little bit,” Ricky Ponting said on the ICC Review.
“I think he has to re-trust and believe in what has made him the world’s No.2-ranked Test batsman for the last couple of years.” “That’s really all I’d say to him,” he added.

Furthermore, Ponting had a slew of advice for Travis Head. The former Australian captain claimed that Head must devise a strategy to overcome the English bowlers’ early phase of assault.
“First and foremost, he’ll be aware that it’s going to happen. He’ll expect it, thus I believe he’ll have to work on it in his own mind. What is the best approach for him to deal with that kind of bowling? Is it going to be a challenge? Will he be successful if he tries to hook and draw balls into his body? Does he figure out how to duck and weave and get out of the path a little better in order to wear the bowlers down?” Ponting explained.
