Clive Lloyd supports the participation of athletes in franchise leagues

Clive Lloyd supports the participation of athletes in franchise leagues. The question of whether it is appropriate for players to play in franchise leagues more than for their national team has long been debated.

Clive Lloyd is regard as one of the greatest cricketers of all time. He is also regard as one of the most powerful captains of all time. In 1975 and 1979, he led the West Indies to two consecutive World Cup victories.

There has long been disagreement about how much significance players should place on franchise leagues. With a new league forming on a regular basis, athletes now have more opportunities to secure a lucrative contract rather than waiting for a national call-up.

Getting into a country’s first XI is a difficult task. However, franchise leagues reduce competitiveness because players who are not select for their national teams can make a solid livelihood by playing in franchise leagues. The biggest issue with franchise leagues has been that once players secure lucrative contracts in those leagues, their willingness to play for their country significantly decreases.

Lloyd discussed the dilemma with Revsportz on the episode ‘Backstage With Boria’ to honor the 40th anniversary of India’s 1983 World Cup victory.

“I believe we went to Kerry Packer because we didn’t know what we were worth.” These guys now understand their worth. But, since IPL is such a vital part of their lives, I believe they should be given a time to play IPL.

Players should not participate in franchise leagues to the detriment of playing for their country: Clive Lloyd

The West Indies have lost a number of players to franchise leagues. Sunil Narine and Andre Russell, two-time T20 World Cup champions, rarely play for the team these days because they are busy playing in leagues around the world. Lloyd feels that players cannot be prohibited from participating in these competitions, but they should keep in mind that their absence is not detrimental to the nation.

“You won’t be able to stop them. It provides them with a bright future. But the issue is that they should not do so at the expense of representing their country or their nation. And we suffer because we are only 5.5 million people. So, if we train twenty players and lose 10, it’s the equivalent of digging a hole to fill a hole. That is something I do not want.

“I want our best players to play, and I want them to play well.” As a result, we must create an environment in which players want to play for their country.”
