Wasim Jaffer offers his thoughts ahead of India’s third T20ls against New Zealand. The series is now tied 1-1.
Despite securing his place as an opener in the ODI squad. Shubman Gill has struggled miserably in the game’s shortest format. In the present T20I series against New Zealand, the 23-year-old only score 18 runs in two matches, putting his status in the playing XI in jeopardy. With Prithvi Shaw on the bench, who can provide the Men in Blue a strong start up the order, Gill’s place may be called into doubt.
Former India hitter Wasim Jaffer feels that Shaw, the U19 World Cup-winning skipper, can replace Gill owing to the Mumbai batter’s current form. The 44-year-old also stated that he is unconcerned about Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tripathi’s struggles to establish form.
“If India contemplate a change, maybe Prithvi Shaw might come in for Shubman Gill since he is in a strong form and is better suited for T20 cricket. But, beyond from that, I’m not too concerned about Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tripathi,” Jaffer told ESPNcricinfo.

‘Umran Malik struggles in T20 cricket’ – Wasim Jaffer prefers Chahal over young pacer
Even on the spin-friendly Lucknow surface, skipper Hardik Pandya only gave Yuzvendra Chahal two overs in the low-scoring affair. He just gave up four runs in the process and took the crucial wicket of Finn Allen. As a result of his performance, Jaffer wants the team management to back Chahal and believes he should continue to play instead of Umran Malik, who he believes suffers in T20 cricket.
“It would be preferable to have Yuzvendra Chahal since New Zealand struggle against spinners and if there is a wrist-spinner, India must use it. Umran Malik, as previously said, suffers at T20 cricket. He has yet to master the variations required for success in this style. So Chahal is a better alternative in that regard,” the former cricketer continued.
