On Day 1 of the first Test against the West Indies, Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne smashed an unbeaten century to give his team the upper hand.
West Indies rookie Jeremy Solozano was hospitalized after being injured while fielding on Sunday. With two overs remaining, bad light forced an early stop to the day’s play at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, with the hosts finishing on 267-3. Karunaratne batted all day after winning the toss on a sluggish track, putting on a 139-run partnership with Pathum Nissanka for the first wicket.
Roston Chase, a part-time spinner, quickly bowled Oshada Fernando and Angelo Mathews for three runs each to pull the West Indies back into the game.
But Sri Lanka regained control as Karunaratne and Dhananjaya de Silva put on a 97-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Karunaratne’s century was his 13th in Test cricket and his fourth this season. Despite only playing 10 innings, he has scored moreover 750 runs in 2021, including a career-best 244 against Bangladesh.
When Karunaratne attempted a full-blooded pull shot off Chase’s bowling, the ball crashed into the helmet grill of Solorzano, who was fielding at short leg, giving the West Indies a scare.
Medical personnel treated him on the ground before transferring him to a waiting ambulance on a stretcher.

Arjuna de Silva, the head of the Sri Lanka Cricket medical panel, told AFP:
“He underwent scans at a hospital in Colombo and will be kept overnight for observation,”
“There’s no internal bleeding and the scans show no structural damage,” he added.

‘We have to show patience,’ said Shannon Gabriel, who got the tourists off to a good start. When he had Nissanka caught at first slip for 56 after pursuing a full ball wide outside the off-stump.
