But Shastri believes a World Cup victory is within reach for the team, which will be led by a new T20 skipper and coached by Rahul Dravid.
“I’m not saying a great cricket team India, I’m saying one of the great cricket teams in the history of the game,” Shastri told reporters.
“You’ve got to have a bunch of players who are fit, hungry, fearless, have the quality, have the belief, and then to stay fit so you can play those five years together and go across the globe and perform everywhere.”
India came into the tournament as favorites, but they dropped out of the semi-final race after losing their first two games by large scores, and New Zealand’s win against Afghanistan on Sunday effectively eliminated Kohli’s team.
“We lacked the daring in the second game against New Zealand. But still, it’s something for the boys to learn. They’ll get an opportunity again next year,” Shastri said of next year’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
“It’s not often you have World Cups in 12 months. So hopefully, they’ll go and kick some butt there.”
India: Rohit, ‘capable guy’
Senior batsman Rohit Sharma is expected to take over as T20I captain from Kohli, who will stay captain in Tests and ODIs. And Shastri believes the decision is the way forward in the coronavirus pandemic bubble.
“The players need to be rotated around and given the space they need. To spend some time with their families, see their parents.”
The Indian Premier League, which was held in the United Arab Emirates. And ended two days before the T20 World Cup, has been blamed for the players‘ exhaustion.
Shastri, who is 59 years old, stated that he makes no excuses.
