Afghanistan’s Gulbadin Naib: Gulbadin Naib, an Afghanistan all-rounder, claimed on Sunday that his squad did well in the T20 World Cup 2021.
Highlights
- Naib on Afghanistan’s T20 World Cup campaign: “We did a lot of positive things.”
- From Group 2, New Zealand and Pakistan qualified for the semifinals.
- Afghanistan lost their final match of the tournament to New Zealand.
Gulbadin Naib, an Afghanistan all-rounder, stated on Sunday that his squad did well in the T20 World Cup 2021 despite the country’s turbulent build-up following the Taliban’s takeover. In the Super 12, Afghanistan won two games and lost three. The entire country expected them to beat New Zealand in order to keep Virat Kohli’s squad in the tournament, but the Black Caps were too strong for them. Afghanistan has also qualified for the T20 World Cup in Australia next year by default.
“In the end, everything, we came out here like three days before the tournament. And it’s great stuff for our team and our boys who deliver very quickly, and we did a lot of good things here.

Afghanistan’s Naib said, who led in the 2019 World Cup, at the post-match media interaction:
“So also a good thing for us, so we qualified for the next World Cup. We’re in the top eight. But it’s a lot of work now,”
Rashid Khan, the star spinner, also resigned as captain before the T20 World Cup, claiming that he was not consulted before the squad was chosen. Naib stated that his team must work harder in order to defeat prominent teams such as India, New Zealand, and Pakistan, whom they lost to earlier in the league.
However, there were some positive aspects to their campaign as well.
“First of all, you look at the start of the tournament, especially for Afghanistan, we beat West Indies in the warm-up game, and also we beat Scotland is like a one-sided game.
“And then if you look at the Pakistan side and India side, it’s not easy. They’re a big team. So they didn’t give you a single chance. But we have a lot of work on our team.
“So it’s not like it’s over. We can do a lot of work on the team. So like before that World Cup we didn’t have much time to prepare our team,” said Naib.
