India demonstrated their class and strength with an all-around performance as they thrashed Scotland by eight wickets in a Super 12 match on Friday.
Clinching their place in the ICC T20 World Cup.
The entire match lasted only 24.1 overs, as India skittled Scotland for 85 in 17.4 overs. And then batted for another 6.3 overs to finish off the runs, bringing the net run rate to +1.619. Which is currently the best among all six sides, surpassing even top-ranked Pakistan (+1.065).
India needed to score the requisite runs in 7.1 overs to beat Afghanistan’s current Net Run-Rate of +1.481. And KL Rahul (50 off 19 balls) and Rohit Sharma (30 off 16 balls) scored 70 in five overs to ensure they did so in style.
The quickest team 50 of the tournament came in under four overs. And Scotland’s bowlers had no idea what hit them as they combined for 11 fours and four sixes.
But that was the portion of the story that could be controlled. What they don’t have control over is their fate. Which will be decided by the Rashid Khans, Mohammed Nabis, on Sunday against New Zealand.
If Afghanistan wins, India will have learned how to beat Namibia. And will advance to the semi-finals when no one expected them to.

However, if New Zealand wins, India will be eliminated from the tournament.
The disrespect with which Rahul batted demonstrated how to hurt the Indian squad was and their desire to at least remedy what they could.
There were pulls, pick-up pulls, flat batted strokes. And slog sweeps, all of which indicated his intention to demonize the bowlers.
Any opposition would be scared of his batsmanship, and when he was caught. Trying to get his fourth six, India had already won the game. In fact, it was over in the first innings when Virat Kohli, on his 33rd birthday. Finally won the toss and put Scotland in to bat.
The experienced Indian spinners then made quick work of the unheralded batting line-up. With Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja returning with identical career-best T20 figures of 3 for 15.
Jasprit Bumrah (2/10) has eclipsed Yuzvendra Chahal (63 wickets) as India’s leading wicket-taker in the shortest format.
To express positive intent, left-handed opener George Munsey (24 off 19 balls) clipped Bumrah. Over square leg for a six and reverse swept Varun Chakravarthy for a boundary. But the class divide was always apparent.
Kyle Coetzer (1) was caught on the back foot by a Bumrah yorker first up, but he bowled a slower one that beat the Scotsman all the way to the end.
The dangerous-looking Munsey was next sent back by a lethal Shami (3/15), who failed to clear mid-on. That was the end of Scotland’s brief moment of brilliance in the batting department.
Jadeja (3/15) blew away the middle-order with his ‘darts like accuracy, dismissing Matthew Cross (2), Richie Berrington (0), and Michael Leask (21 off 12 balls) in quick succession.
Jadeja’s deliveries varied in velocity, although he occasionally bowled the ones that skidded over the surface, rushing the hitters.
The Indian bowlers had no chance when Scotland was reduced to 44 for 4 after 10 overs.
Even percentage bowling was enough to upset Scotland’s batters, who didn’t have a lot of choices to keep the scoreboard ticking.
Scotland’s prior dismal performance with willow against weaker teams like Namibia and Afghanistan suggested they wouldn’t do much better against India.
The lower order was caught between survival and attack once half the side was out with less than 60 on the board.
Calum MacLeod (16 off 28 balls) toiled away before getting bowled out by Shami, as the Indians dismantled the opposition with a minimum of effort balls.
Except for one, when Shami yorked No. 10 Alasdair Evans with a 90 mph thunderbolt. It was one of those joyful evenings at the office where skipper Kohli didn’t care if a sixth bowler was available or not.
Varun Chakravarthy (0/15) and Ravichandran Ashwin (1/29) were similarly accurate for the majority of their outings.
