Najmul Hossain Shanto has served as an interim captain for Bangladesh in all three forms. The senior trio of Harmanpreet, Hayley, and Sciver-Brunt will be looking to motivate the younger players on the team and help the club retain the crown.
Bangladesh have named promising batsman Najmul Hossain Shanto as their full-time skipper in all three formats of cricket.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) made this decision during a board meeting on Monday, February 12, at the BCB headquarters in Dhaka’s Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
“We discussed captaincy at length… The board has decided to appoint Nazmul Hossain Shanto as captain for all three formats this year. ” Youth and sports minister and BCB president Najmul Hassan Papon told The Daily Star.
Shanto led Bangladesh in both the home and away series against New Zealand last year, in the absence of regular captain Shakib Al Hasan.
The 25-year-old has led the Bangla Tigers across all three formats of international cricket. Bangladesh won three and lost seven of their 11 matches over three formats under Shanto’s captaincy, with one game ending in a draw.
Bangladesh won their first T20I and ODI on New Zealand soil in December 2023, under Shanto’s leadership. His first assignment as full-time captain will be a multi-format home series against Sri Lanka, which begins next month. The two Asian teams will face off in three T20Is and as many ODIs before playing a pair of Tests.
Papon stated that Shakib, who is now a member of parliament, was still their ‘Number 1 candidate for captaincy’. However, doubts about the talismanic all-rounder’s availability due to eye difficulties compelled the board to make the adjustment. For those who are unaware, Shakib stated prior to the 2023 ODI World Cup that he will step down as captain of the 50-over format following the flagship tournament. Meanwhile, Shanto showed an interest in leading the national squad in all three formats.
