Nathan Lyon discusses his retirement intentions. Lyon is Australia’s most successful off-spinner of all time.
Nathan Lyon is on the verge of creating history as he is only four wickets away from 500 Test wickets. A milestone only seven bowlers have achieved to far, including three spinners – Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Anil Kumble.
On Wednesday, December 13, one day before the first Test against Pakistan, Australia confirmed their playing XI. Lyon rejoined the Australian Test squad after sustaining a rare calf injury while fielding in the second Ashes Test earlier this year. The veteran off-spinner will have the opportunity to join the exclusive 500-club at a stadium where he has 22 wickets at an average of 18.45 in three Tests.

Lyon, widely regarded as a red-ball specialist, was asked about his retirement plans before of the first Test.
The 36-year-old refused to set a retirement date and stated that he wants to win Test series in India and England before hanging up his boots.
“I’m not putting a number on it. ” He respond when ask whether he was aiming to break Warne’s record as Australia’s best Test bowler. Lyon told Cricket Australia (CA): “I want to play cricket for as long as I can.”
“I haven’t won a Test series in India, and I haven’t won a Test series in England – those are two places I want to win. So with the injury a couple of months ago. I feel like there’s a passion there to keep going and trying to get better.” “I’ve had the mindset that no one has ever rehabbed a calf injury before. ” Lyon continued.
Australia is set to return to England for another Ashes visit in 2027. Pat Cummins and company grabbed a 2-0 lead in the Ashes earlier this year in England. However, they were unable to maintain their lead, as England won two of the next three Tests to level the series.
