On Wednesday, November 8, England and the Netherlands will face off in Match 40 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. England skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bat first, with openers Jonny Bairstow (15 off 17) and Dawid Malan adding 48 runs off 42 balls for the first wicket.
Aryan Dutt dismissed Bairstow in the seventh over, giving the Dutch their first victory. His departure brought Joe Root to the crease, where he and Malan put up an 85-run stand. However, Root’s promising start cut short when he bowl between the legs by Logan van Beek.
The 32-year-old was attempting his signature reverse scoop over third man. He did, however, completely miss the ball, which flew between his legs and demolished his stumps, leading in a humiliating dismissal. Joe Root bowled between the legs expulsion upset an England supporter in the audience, who expressed his disgust with his attitude.

Earlier in the innings, Root managed to successfully execute the shot as he got four runs on the first ball of the 14th over. However, he failed to execute well on his second attempt which resulted in his dismissal on 28 (35). With his innings, Root continued his dismal run in the ongoing World Cup as he has managed to score just 216 runs from eight innings at an average of 27 and a strike rate of 90.

In the 2019 version, the standout hitter led his team in scoring with 556 runs in 11 innings. Meanwhile, immediately after Root’s departure, Malan was also dismissed for 87 (74). Following the dismissal of the dup, Ben Stokes achieved his maiden century in the ODI World Cup with a brilliant performance of 108 (84). As the duo advanced England’s total to 339/9 in their allocated 50 overs. He was ably backed by Chris Woakes (51 off 45).
