Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan reacts why he chose a timed out dismissal for Angelo Mathews in the ODI World Cup match in Delhi. On October 6, Mathews step out to bat after Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed during the 25th over of Sri Lanka’s innings in a match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Delhi. The veteran all-rounder arrived late at the crease due to a broken helmet. The Bangladesh captain plead for a time out dismissal in the meantime, and the umpire pronounced the batter out after a series of discussions.
In the middle of criticism and disagreement around the Spirit of the Game, Shakib has explained his stance, stating that his actions were only for the sake of the squad. The 36-year-old also state that what he did was legal, even if he is unsure if it was right or bad.
“One of our fielders approached me and said, ‘If you appeal now, he will be out, if you are serious.'” Then I appealed, and the umpire question whether I was serious and if I was going to take it back or not. “I said no if it’s in the rule; if it’s out, I [won’t] take it back,” Shakib stated at the post-match presentation.
“It’s written in the laws.” I’m not sure if it’s correct or incorrect. But I felt like I was in a battle. I had to make a decision to ensure that my team won, and I had to do whatever I had to do. There will be disputes, right or wrong. But if it’s under the regulations, I’m not afraid to take such risks,” the all-rounder continued.

I’m unhappy that the umpires didn’t react to that and add some common sense: Mendis
Sri Lanka’s stand-in captain, Kusal Mendis, expressed unhappiness with the umpires’ decision to rule time out. Saying they should have used more common sense in the scenario. The wicketkeeper-batter went on to explain that the squad anticipate Mathews to score more runs. The officials’ decision harm Sri Lanka’s performance.
“It’s very disappointing that when Angelo enter the crease, there were only a few seconds. Maybe five seconds, for him to be ready.” He discovered that his helmet strap had fallen undone. It’s a problem with the equipment. So I’m upset that the umpires didn’t react to it and add some common sense,” Mendis said after the game.
“It is unfortunate that it happened during a crucial time that after the fall of a wicket. Angelo, we expected him to score some runs for us, and it’s disappointing that the umpires couldn’t step in and make good decisions at that time,” the 28-year-old added.
