Shai Hope reflects on the crushing defeat in the first ODI against India. The first ODI of the three-match series saw India defeat the West Indies by five wickets.

After losing the two-match Test series, the West Indies prepared to face Rohit Sharma’s India in a three-match One-Day International series, with the first ODI planned for Thursday, July 27. The game began, and the Windies got off to the worst possible start to the white-ball series, as India easily defeated the hosts.

Team India stamped their grip on the ODI series by chasing the score in just 23 overs and winning by five wickets. After winning the first game, the squad will be looking to replicate its performance in the remaining games of the series.

Following the Windies’ batting collapse and underperformance in the first ODI, ODI skipper Shai Hope took center stage to throw further light on the situation. Hope came forth to say that, while he is not making excuses for the loss, he is concerned about the difficult pitch that was in play and the team’s inability to perform on it.

“Let’s just say we didn’t play as well as we should have.” On a difficult pitch, we must find methods to score. I’m not making excuses, but everyone who watches cricket can see what’s going on. But we have to find ways to score,” Hope remarked at the post-match ceremony.

Batting collapse led to West Indies’ demise

In terms of the game, the Windies batted first after losing the toss. Their entire batting order, though, was at the mercy of the Indian bowlers. The West Indies were bowled out for a paltry 114 runs in the first innings, with skipper Hope scoring the most runs with 43.

The brilliance of Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, who took three and four wickets, respectively, helped the visitors ahead in the run chase. In the second innings, India lost five wickets while pursuing the score. However, Ishan Kishan’s 52-run knock in 46 deliveries helped India take the ODI series.
