After winning the toss and deciding to bat in the first Test at Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite, nothing has gone their way. Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul gave their team a cautious start, but the latter left the game with the home team up by 31 runs and an individual score of 12.

The 36-year-old also surpassed Anil Kumble’s total of 94 wickets to set a new mark for the most bowled dismissals by an Indian bowler in Test matches.

India dominate proceedings on Day 1

In the opening session of Day 1, the guests were in charge. West Indies scored just 68 runs in 28 overs at lunchtime after losing four wickets. While Raymon Reifer and Jermaine Blackwood were dismissed by Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja, respectively, Ashwin took the wickets of Chanderpaul and Brathwaite.

Soon after lunch, Joshua Da Silva was out as Ravindra Jadeja hit once more, significantly hurting the West Indies. In his 13-ball tenure, the wicketkeeper-batter only managed a few runs. India would have hoped to start the 2023–2025 World Test Championship cycle on a winning note after falling to Australia in the final of the previous edition in June. As the game progresses, they hope to capitalize on a strong start because they have looked fairly sharp on the field. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan received their first Test caps from India earlier in the day. When the chance arises, it will be intriguing to observe how the two youngsters perform with the bat.
