Former India opener Aakash Chopra has commented on Cheteshwar Pujara’s record in England as the Rohit Sharma-led team prepares to compete in the 2023 ICC World Test Championship (WTC). For the second time in a row, India will compete in the WTC final
The first WTC final, held in 2019-21, featured a clash between India and New Zealand. Which was won by the Kane Williamson-led side.
While previewing the game, Chopra stated that Pujara performed outstanding in the County Championship, which is how he was able to return to the Indian squad. He also stated that while the 35-year-old hitter has played one fewer match than Virat Kohli, he does not have a strong Test record in England.
“In county cricket, Pujara has scored a lot of runs. ” In reality, only he has made a comeback into the Indian team as a result of this. The truth is that he has probably played one match fewer than Kohli, but his figures are not flattering at all. ” Chopra stated in a video posted to his YouTube account.
The former KKR hitter went on to suggest that Ajinkya Rahane’s Test average in England is comparable to Pujara’s. He went on to say that while both have played a lot of matches and scored century, their Test average is less than 30, which isn’t great.
“His (Pujara’s) average is under 30. The answer is either 26 or 29. His and Rahane’s averages are nearly identical. The first has 26 and the second has 29. They’ve played a lot of matches and each scored a century, but the average on England grounds over time is less than 30, which isn’t terrific,” he continued.
Kohli’s Test average has been below-par in England: Chopra
Chopra went on to say that even Kohli’s batting average in England has been below-par. The 45-year-old stated that he has scored 1000 runs or more, making him the only Indian to do so in the present setup, but his average is 33. Notably, in 16 Tests on English soil, the former India captain has accumulated 1033 runs at an average of 33.32.
“When it comes to Kohli’s performances, his average is also only 33.” He has over 1000 runs, the only Indian in this current squad configuration, but his average is 33 because the 2014 series was terrible and the last one was mediocre,” the former cricketer said.
