ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka Cricket has slashed the price of tickets and allowed spectators for free in the ongoing knockout stage of Lanka Premier League (LPL) after poor crowd for the games amid an unprecedented economic crisis along with 65 percent inflation.
Analysts say the economic crisis is taking the toll gradually with people struggling to meet their ends due to high food and energy prices without any pay hike.
Cricket is considered as the island nation’s main sport and millions of people back the game regardless of a 30-year war and many other key issues the country faced.
However, the ongoing LPL knockout attracted a poor crowd after the governing body Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced higher ticket prices.
As a result, SLC was forced to allow spectators free of charge at C&D Lower Stand instead of charging 400 rupees per individual.
The SLC also slashed the ticket prices – from 3,500 rupees to 1,500 for Grand Stand and from 1,000 rupees to 300 for C&D Upper Stand.
“Economic crisis could be one of the reasons for the poor crowd. But this tournament comes after the recent T20 World Cup and Afghan Tour. Also many people have been more interested in World Cup football,” an official at the SLC told EconomyNext, asking not to be named.
“Usually there was a lot of interest for the last two LPL.”
Many Sri Lankans have been cutting their entertainment and unnecessary costs to ensure their daily meals amid higher transport, energy, and water costs.

The earliest known match for Sri Lanka dates back to 1832, however, the actual history of Sri Lanka Cricket began 158 years ago, with the foundation of Columbo Cricket Club in 1863. Sri Lanka, which was previously known as Ceylon, played their inaugural first-class match in 1926 under the name of the Ceylon national cricket team. They will begin 2022 with 3 Tests and 3 T20Is in India. Between June and August 2022, they will host Australia for 2 Tests and 5 ODIs, and Pakistan for 2 Tests and 3 ODIs. Asia Cup 2022 will again be hosted in Sri Lanka in September 2022. After hosting West Indies for 2 Tests in October-November, the Sri Lanka cricket team will travel to New Zealand for 2 Tests and 3 ODIs. They will then play 5 ODIs in India between December 2022 and January 2023. They will then host a tri-series with South Africa and Ireland in January-February 2023.

Sri Lanka cricket team has just returned from South Africa after playing 2 Test matches. In the history of cricket, Sri Lanka have produced some of the greatest players like the prolific batsman Aravinda de Silva, a great leader in Arjuna Ranatunga, dangerous batsman Sanath Jayasuriya who rocked Wills World Cup 1996. The left-arm seamer Chaminda Vaas, death-overs specialist Lasith Malinga, Hashan Tillakaratne, Marvan Atapattu, and the great off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan and a great keeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara are some if the other great Sri Lanka cricket players.
Muttiah Muralitharan is considered one of the best players of all time from any country. Among all Sri Lanka cricket players, Muralitharan has been a major contributor to the team’s success with 800 Test wickets and 534 ODI wickets, the most wickets by any players in both formats. His best bowling figure is 9 for 51, and he has taken 5-wickets or more in an innings 67 times, and 10 or more wickets in a Test 22 times. Rangana Herath (433 Test wickets) and Vaas (355 Test wickets) follow Muralitharan in the list of most wickets by any Sri Lanka cricket players. Vaas (400 ODI wickets) and Malinga (338 ODI wickets) are the second and the third most successful ODI bowlers for Sri Lanka.
Kumar Sangakkara ranks as top batsman among Sri Lanka cricket players. He has scored more runs and centuries in Tests (12400 runs with 38 centuries) than any other Sri Lankan cricket players ever. Mahela Jayawardene is the second-most successful batsman in Test cricket for Sri Lanka with 11814 runs and 34 Test centuries. Sanath Jayasuriya’s name will go down in the history for his destructive batting during the 1996 World Cup.

Dimuth Karunaratne leads the ODI side too and he opens the innings with Avishka Fernando, while wicket-keeper Kusal Perera comes at number three. Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva and form the middle-order. Thisara Perera and PWH de Silva play their part as all-rounders at number seven and number eight. Left-arm bowler Isuru Udana and right-arm bowler Nuwan Pradeep form a very good pace unit, while left-arm Lakshan Sandakan plays his part as a spinner, as he can turn the ball both ways.

Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka and PWH de Silva, and Thisara Perera form the middle and lower-middle order. Lahiru Kumara, Thisara Perera, and Lasith Malinga lead the bowling unit with their pace, and they get decent support from Angelo Mathews. Sri Lanka and India played their first Test match in 1982-83 in India which was drawn. Since then, both the teams played 44 Test matches, from which India won 20 and Sri Lanka won 7 matches, while they drew 17 Tests. Their last bilateral series was in Nov-Dec 2017, in which they played 3 Tests, 3 ODIs, and 3 T20Is. Sri Lanka lost all three series then, Test series by 0-1, ODI series by 1-2, and T20 series by 0-3.
The two sides played their first-ever game, an ODI in the 1979 World Cup, at Old Trafford, Manchester, which Sri Lanka won by 47 runs. They played a total of 159 ODI matches to date, out of which Sri Lanka won 56 matches, India won 91 and 11 matches yielded no results, while 1 game was tied.

Sri Lanka faced New Zealand first time in the Prudential World Cup 1979, which they lost by 9 wickets. The two teams thereafter played 99 ODI matches, out of which the Lions won 41, lost 39, tied 1, while 8 matches ended in no-results. Their first Test encounter was in 1982-83 in New Zealand, for the two-Tests series, which Sri Lanka lost 0-2. When New Zealand toured Sri Lanka in 2009, they claimed the first white-wash against New Zealand by winning the two-Tests series by 2-0. Sri Lanka won the first Test at Galle by 202 runs, and the second at Colombo by 96 runs. Thilan Samaraweera was the player of the series for his 347 runs in two Tests which included two centuries (159 and 143 runs).

Sri Lanka and South Africa clashed first time in Benson & Hedges World Cup 1992, in which Sri Lanka won by 3 wickets. Since then the two teams played 77 ODI matches, out of which Sri Lanka won 31, lost 44, tied 1, and 1 match was abandoned. Their first Test match was in 1993 at Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, which was drawn. In the recently concluded 2020-21 Test series between the two teams in South Africa, Sri Lanka lost both the Test matches.
Sri Lanka’s first association with Bangladesh dates back to 1986, when they played an ODI match in Asia Cup, and Sri Lanka had won the match by 7 wickets. The Lions played 48 ODI games against Bangladesh to date, and won 39, lost just 7, while 2 matches were abandoned. Their first Test encounter was in 2001-02, for a standalone Test match. In the 1975 Prudential World Cup, the Sri Lankan cricket team faced a fierce West Indies cricket team, in which Sri Lanka lost by 9 wickets. To date, they played 60 ODIs, won 29, lost 28, and three matches were abandoned. The two teams played their first Test match in 1993-94 in Sri Lanka, which ended in a draw. Sri Lanka first played against Pakistan in an ODI match for the Prudential World Cup 1975, which they lost by 192 runs. Their first Test encounter was in 1981-82 in Karachi, Pakistan, in which Pakistan won by 204 runs. Since then both sides played 55 Tests, out of which Pakistan won 20, Sri Lanka 16, and 19 matches were drawn. It was after 10 years, a Test match was played in Pakistan. Sri Lanka lost the ODI series 0-2 and won the T20I series by 3–0. The Test series went in favour of Pakistan as Sri Lanka lost the second Test by 263 runs after the first match was drawn.
Sri Lanka and Australia played their first-ever Test in 1988 at Perth, in which Sri Lanka lost by an innings and 108 runs. Thereafter the two teams played 31 Tests, from which Sri Lanka managed just 4 wins, lost 19, and drew 8. Their first Test win against Australia was in the 1999 Test series in Sri Lanka, while the first series win was in 2016 again in Sri Lanka. They never won a Test in Australia so far. In One Day Internationals, the two teams had their first encounter in the 1975 World Cup. Since then, they played 97 ODIs, from which Sri Lanka won 32, lost 61, and 4 ODIs ended in no-results.
