Martin Guptill honors his late father by dedicating the 18th ODI century to him. Guptill lost his father five years ago, in 2017.

New Zealand and Ireland faced off in the third and final one-day international (ODI) of the three-match series. The game featured three centurions in the form of Ireland’s Paul Stirling, England’s Harry Tector, and New Zealand’s Martin Guptill. On the field, the Black Caps’ centurion had a special moment as he dedicated his century to his late father.

New Zealand was able to post a massive total of 360 runs thanks to Martin Guptill’s century. Henry Nicholls’ 54-ball 79-run performance also paid off. In pursuit of 361 runs, Irish opener Paul Stirling was at his best, and he was well assisted by middle order batter Harry Tector, who put up a century stand and also bagged hundreds. Unfortunately, their knocks were in vain.

“I lost my father five years ago, and it was nice to do this for him,” Guptill said after receiving the Player of the Match trophy for his 126-ball 115, which was his 18th ODI century. Guptill’s father died in 2017.

With this victory, New Zealand won the series 3-0 over Ireland, but two of the three games were nail-biters. New Zealand won the first game by one wicket on the penultimate ball of the game, easily won the second game, and then won the third game by preventing Ireland from chasing the score on the final ball of the game and winning by one run.

“A bit of a half-inning, really, out of the blocks pretty quickly, felt really good up until about 75, then I just got myself stuck in a bit of a hole and couldn’t rotate the strike as well as I had been and just got a little bit frustrated,” Guptill said of his outing.

Our boys are excited to play some T20 cricket:  Martin Guptill

The two teams will now play a three-match T20I series, with the first game scheduled for July 18, Monday in Belfast. New Zealand is in great form after a huge win, and the three games will also help them prepare for the T20 World Cup in 2022.

“I’d say it’ll be pretty exciting again.” It’ll be better with a shorter format and a faster pace. “I know our boys are excited to play some T20 cricket before the World Cup later this year,” Guptill added.
