Du Plessis succeeds Virat Kohli. Who stepped down as captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the end of the previous season.

Du Plessis will become the Royal Challengers’ seventh captain. Following Rahul Dravid, Kevin Pietersen, Anil Kumble, Daniel Vettori, Virat Kohli, and Shane Watson.
Kohli has captained the team in the most games. With a win percentage of 48.16 in 140 games (64 wins, 69 losses, three ties, and four no results).
While this will be Du Plessis’ first captaincy assignment in the IPL. He has previously led several T20 teams in international cricket. Including South Africa and the World XI.
The RCB captain, Faf du Plessis, has been named ahead of the IPL 2022 season.
Du Plessis has also led the Comilla Victorians, Paarl Rocks, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, and St Lucia Kings in T20s. He has previously captained the T20 team in 79 matches, with a win percentage of 55.76 and results of 43 wins, 34 losses, one tie, and one no result.
In the 2011 IPL auction, Du Plessis was signed by Chennai Super Kings. But he didn’t play in the tournament until the following season.
He was a member of the Super Kings from 2012 to 2015. And he represented the Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016 and 2017 during the team’s two-year suspension. From 2018 to 2021, he was back with the Super Kings, winning two titles during that time.
In the mega auction earlier this year. He received a bid from the Super Kings, but the Royal Challengers, who were in a bidding war with the Delhi Capitals for Du Plessis, eventually got him for INR 7 crore.
Du Plessis has scored 2935 runs at an average of 34.94 and a strike rate of 131.08 in 100 IPL matches (93 innings), with 22 half-centuries. He has 1640 runs in 47 innings in the last four IPL seasons, with 633 of those runs coming in 2021.
His last T20I appearance was against England in December 2020 (in which he scored an unbeaten 52), while his last ODI was against Australia in the 2019 World Cup (in which he struck a hundred).

In February 2021, Du Plessis announced his retirement from Test cricket. Citing the Pakistan series as his final, and stating that he would focus on T20 cricket and the T20 World Cup.
