Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull blasted Ajinkya Rahane on Star Sports, pointing out his vulnerability against spin bowling. On Day 4 of the current first Test match in Kanpur, India set a formidable 284-run total for New Zealand, with Shreyas Iyer in great form.
Highlights
- Ajinkya Rahane has been chastised by former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull.
- In recent months, Rahane has struggled with his batting form.
- In Kanpur, Rahane could only manage four runs in India’s second innings.
Despite the high target, the home side’s senior hitters failed to deliver, with Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara contributing only 22 and four runs, respectively, to the scoreboard.
Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull slammed Rahane’s performance on Star Sports saying: “the backup skipper should be “worried” about his form”

Ajaz Patel trapped Rahane LBW in the 15th over of India’s second innings. Rahane attempted to defend an angled delivery from the spinner. The batter mistimed his block, and the ball landed right in front of the stumps on the batter’s pad.
The 33-year-old spoke briefly with Mayank Agarwal, who was on the non-side, the strikers before deciding not to examine it.
The former cricketer also compared the Indian squad for the first Test match to legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, concluding that they lacked the quality of those players.
Former New Zealand Cricketer Simon Doull:
“He’s a more capable player. You can see a number of full deliveries outside the line of off-stump in his dismissals against spin since 2019. So, with the one that’s skidding on, he’s nicked off, or he’s chipping one to cover mid-off and such spots, and he’s getting lbw “
He went on to say, “So, those are the dismissals against spin that he would be concerned about.”
The absence of India’s premier spin spinners in domestic cricket, according to Doull, makes it difficult for Indian hitters to face spin.
According to him, “Is this because the current crop of spinners – the top quality ones, the Jadejas, Ashwins, and Axar Patels – don’t play domestic cricket, therefore the batsmen aren’t exposed to high-grade spin? Is it possible that the batsmen haven’t played enough domestic cricket to be exposed to high-quality spin?”
Initially, India scored 345 in their first innings, thanks to Iyer’s superb century. In response, New Zealand scored 296 in their first innings, thanks to a five-wicket haul by Axar Patel.
India declared after reaching 234 for seven in their second innings, with Iyer hammering another half-century.
On Day 4, the visitors went four for one before the game ended. To win the Test match, New Zealand will need to score 280 runs on Day 5.
