Davis Cup Novak 2021 Headline: The tournament’s major attractions are Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev, the two top-ranked players in the world, who are attempting to re-establish themselves this week following the postponement of the 2020 event.
Highlights
- The Davis Cup is headlined by Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev.
- Djokovic and Medvedev are the world’s top ranked players.
- The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the David Cup in 2020.
The Davis Cup, which originated in 1900 as a bilateral competition between the United Kingdom and the United States, has undergone various transformations, the most recent of which occurred in 2019 when it was reconfigured to resemble a global championship. This year’s event will be played over 11 days in three cities by 18 teams divided into six groups.
The group stages, which begin on Thursday, will be held in Madrid, Turin, and Innsbruck, where matches will be played in an empty venue due to an increase in coronavirus cases and the associated lockdown in Austria.
The semi-finals and final will all be held in Madrid on December 5, as a prize for the squad who won the title two years ago.
Rafael Nadal was available to Spain at the time.
This time, though, the 35-year-old is out of action due to a foot injury that has limited him to a single tournament since falling in the semi-finals of the French Open against Djokovic.
Next month, the 20-time Major winner plans to return to the courts in Abu Dhabi.
If the holders are to advance from their group to the quarter-finals, they must beat Medvedev’s Russian squad on Sunday.
Sergi Bruguera, Spain’s captain remarked:
“It’s true that we had a significant advantage,”
“If you have Rafael Nadal on your team, you are automatic favorites since he is the best player in Davis Cup history.”
“But he isn’t here, so we can’t talk about it.”
Spain still has three players from the 2019 winning team, including Pablo Carreno Busta, and one of the most interesting young players on the circuit in 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz.
Russia’s chances in Group A, which also includes Ecuador, are riding on a strong all-around performance.
Medvedev, the world number two, is back up by two others in the top 20 — Andrey Rublev (5) and Aslan Karatsev (18) — as well as Olympic silver medalist Karen Khachanov. Medvedev’s season crested with three-set destruction of Djokovic in the US Open final in September (29).
Serbia’s hopes of repeating its 2010 triumph will be heavily reliant on Djokovic.
However, when he lost in the semi-finals of the ATP Finals in Milan last week to Alexander Zverev, the world number one appeared tired.

And he is joins on the sidelines by a slew of other big names. With ten of the top 15 players in the world missing out.
Berretini (7) has yet to recover from an abdominal ailment that forced him to withdraw from the ATP Finals.
Austria will be without Dominic Thiem (15) as he recovers from an injury. That cut short the second half of his season. While 2019 finalists Canada will be without Felix Auger-Aliassime (11) who is injured. As well as Denis Shapovalov (14) who is resting.
Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece), Casper Ruud (Norway), Hubert Hurkacz (Poland). And Diego Schwartzman (USA) are among those whose teams did not qualify (13, Argentina).
The 2021 Davis Cup gets underway on Thursday in Madrid. With Canada facing Sweden in Group B, France facing the Czech Republic in Group C in Innsbruck, and Croatia facing 28-time champion Australia in Group D in Turin.
