Sourav Ganguly opens up about the much-discussed Dhoni-Jurel. In the middle of MS Dhoni’s legacy resonating in the cricketing fraternity, the emergence of Dhruv Jurel as a promising talent has sparked discussions.
In the midst of MS Dhoni’s legacy being felt in the cricketing community, the emergence of Dhruv Jurel as a promising talent has sparked discussions reminiscent of the former Indian captain’s early years. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has refrained from comparing young wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel to the legendary MS Dhoni, despite Jurel’s heroic performance in the fourth Test against England in Ranchi.
Jurel was the hero for India in Dhoni’s hometown, helping the team win the series 3-1 with his outstanding batting under pressure. Many people, including the legendary commentator Sunil Gavaskar, compared the youngster to Dhoni.
However, Ganguly provided a balanced viewpoint, stating that while Jurel possesses immense talent, it is too early to compare him to an all-time great such as Dhoni.
“Dhruv Jurel had a fantastic Test match under pressure on a difficult wicket. There is a lot of talent, and if you miss it and fall down the ranks, it will be extremely difficult to recover. Ganguly informed RevSportz.

Jurel has talent: Sourav Ganguly
However, Ganguly provided a balanced viewpoint, stating that while Jurel possesses immense talent, it is too early to compare him to an all-time great such as Dhoni.
“Dhruv Jurel had a fantastic Test match under pressure on a difficult wicket. There is a lot of talent, and if you miss it and fall down the ranks, it will be extremely difficult to recover. Ganguly informed RevSportz. Jurel’s debut on the international stage has been nothing short of impressive. From his impressive debut in Rajkot to his pivotal contributions in Ranchi, he has demonstrated maturity beyond his years. His ability to thrive under pressure and adapt to difficult situations speaks volumes about his potential.
“MS Dhoni is in a different league. Jurel has talent; there’s no doubt about it. But it took MS Dhoni 20 years to be MS Dhoni. Rather 15 years for Dhoni to be Dhoni. So let him [Jurel] play. Jurel’s ability to play spin, pace, and most importantly to perform under pressure. That’s what you look for in a youngster,” he added.
After the match, Jurel was humble about the Dhoni comparisons. “Obviously it’s a good feeling to hear a legend like Sunil Gavaskar talk about me. The mood was great, there were no specific instructions… just to go out and play. Watch the ball and play. Just that the long I play the better it is,” the cricketer said.
