The 17th Indian Premier League (IPL) auction ahead of the 2024 season is planned to take place in Dubai in a historic move. Mallika Sagar, the auction’s first female auctioneer, will break with convention. Sagar, well-known as the Women’s Premier League’s gavel master, fills in for Hugh Edmeades for this important occasion. Her selection is a watershed event in IPL history, demonstrating inclusivity and diversity on the cricketing scene.
Sagar, the renowned auctioneer from Pundole’s in Mumbai. Returned as the field Premier League auctioneer for the second time in a row, demonstrating her expertise beyond the art field. She began her career as the first Indian-origin woman auctioneer at Christie’s in 2001. Armed with an art history major from Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia.
While the most recent WPL auction was her first as a cricket auctioneer, Sagar is no stranger to sports auctions. She made headlines in 2021 as the Pro Kabaddi League’s auctioneer, breaking norms as the league’s first female auctioneer. This time, she takes over as the auctioneer for a men’s tournament, replacing Edmeades. Her performance at the WPL auction received accolades, paving the way for her historic presence in a men’s cricketing event.

Hugh Edmeades drew accolades for his commitment to craft
Hugh Edmeades, an experienced auctioneer in fine art, antique cars, and philanthropic causes. Spent 38 years at Christie’s until branching out on his own in 2016. He took over from Richard Madley at Christie’s in 2018, and has been a regular at the IPL auction since then.
Last year, during the mega-auction in Bengaluru, Edmeades suffered a health setback when he collapsed owing to “postural hypotension.” While medical aid was being offered, BCCI officials quickly resorted to Charu Sharma to step in. Edmeades miraculously recover and returned to oversee the auction’s completion. Receiving thunderous acclaim and standing ovations from franchises and BCCI members.
