The surprising call-up came following the injury of spin all-rounder Axar Patel during the Asia Cup event. Ashwin last played an ODI in January 2022, during the South Africa tour. Mishra praised Ashwin as a terrific spinner and wicket-taker, but emphasized the specific needs of one-day international cricket. In contrast to T20 matches, an ODI requires a player to bowl for 10 overs, field for 40 overs, and maybe bat.
Mishra believes Ashwin’s fielding abilities and right-handed batting distinguish him from left-handed contemporaries such as Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja. Given his ability as an off-spinner, he believed that Ashwin chosen largely as a wicket-taking option in the event of a spinner’s injury.
“Ashwin is undeniably a good bowler and wicket-taker, but this isn’t a 20-over game.” It has 50 overs. Mishra stated that the decision between Ashwin and Sundar would be influenced by pitch conditions. If the wicket favors spin, Ashwin may get the nod, but Sundar’s fielding ability may be useful on other surfaces.
“The Indian team will be watching Ashwin’s bowling against Australia to see if he still has the wicket-taking abilities in this format.” He is just not on the team because of his fielding and right-handed batting ability.”
