Bridgetown, Barbados, August 2, 2023: The Royals Sports Group-owned Barbados Royals have named West Indies T20I captain Rovman Powell as their captain for the next CPL in 2023. The 30-year-old trade from Jamaica to Barbados earlier this month and will work closely with Head Coach Trevor Penney and Royals Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara. Kyle Mayers, the batting all-rounder from Barbados, name vice-captain and will be part of the leadership group.
Powell, the swashbuckling all-rounder, guided the Jamaica Tallawahs to the CPL title last season. Scoring 1231 runs and taking 17 wickets in 62 matches for the side across his six seasons with them. Powell, who has made the move to the Royals, says he is excited to begin this new chapter with a team he has closely followed.
“First and foremost, I’d like to thank Jamaica for all of the opportunities and memories. As well as all of their supporters. ” However, as a professional cricketer, you go through changes and must make difficult decisions. I’ve always admired Barbados as a CPL franchise, and the opportunity to come here and take on a new task and lead the squad is fantastic. I’ve had a few chats with the coaches and administration, and it appears to be a close-knit franchise. Our group has a terrific blend of talent where everyone compliments each other. After reaching the finals last year, the goal this year will be to bring everyone back together and go one step farther.”

Kumar Sangakkara, the Royals’ Director of Cricket. Explain why Powell named captain.
“After the highs of last season, when we finished as finalists, We went back to the drawing board and identified some areas that needed to be addressed,” he explained. One of them was to bolster our West Indian core of players, and having someone with Rovman’s qualities in our roster adds quality, depth, and experience.
He is also well-respect throughout the Caribbean and has a good cricketing brain. Which I saw even during my stint in Jamaica in 2016-17. He is also the Windies captain in this format and has shown good leadership characteristics. So its only right that we spoke with him and made the choice given David (Miller) is not playing in the CPL this season. Rovman did lead his side to the CPL title last season…unfortunately against us, and we are hoping he can do so again this season with the Royals.”
