Imam den in as Pakistan appreciates a blemish-free session.
In a blemish-free second session at Rawalpindi; Pakistan’s Imam-ul-Haq cruised into the nineties and was only eight runs away from scoring his maiden Test century. As the openers had put up 105 runs, the hosts surged to 171 for 1 after; Azhar Ali and his partner added an unbeaten 66-run stand for the second wicket.
Pakistan milked the Australian bowling, which was disciplined if not sharp; on a benign surface with little support for the bowlers. After lunch, the visitors only gave up 10 runs in the first eight; overs when Imam stepped out to hit Nathan Lyon for a six. After hitting another six and a pair of boundaries in the first session; the left-hander continued to use his feet against spin.
The Australian had Azhar Ali bowled straight at him; with a couple of short leg and leg slip by Cameron Green. With a slog-swept six off Lyon and a controlled pull off Green for a four, Azhar broke free. Josh Hazlewood found a smidgeon of reverse swing at the end of the 50th over; but not enough to worry the hosts’ batters.

Babar Azam had won the toss earlier in the day; having picked three spinners in his XI and electing to bat. Australia persisted to their 4-1 fast-spin ratio and discovered; to their dismay, that the wicket was not conducive to their fast bowlers.
Lyon came in early, even before Cummins, in the eighth over; and was at his best when he got the tougher Kookaburra ball to bounce more on the batters. Abdullah Shafique, the opener, survived a potential leg slip but was beaten by another bowler who kept his line.

Aside from those minor setbacks, Shafique and Imam’s first pairing was flawless. The latter got off to a rough start, hitting only 7 balls out of his first 41. He was able to seamlessly alter gears, striking 43 off his following; four balls to reach a half-century on his Test debut. The lone blemish on Pakistan’s record in the first two sessions came when Shafique was caught attempting; to hit Lyon out of the ground just before lunch.
