Raj Angad Bawa takes 5/31 in the U19 World Cup final: Raj’s father-coach, Sukhwinder Bawa, wants his son to develop into a proper all-rounder and concentrate on his batting.
When Mohammad Kaif’s India won the U-19 World Cup in 2000, Sukhwinder Bawa was the toast of every cricket journalist. Eeveryone wanted a piece of the coach who had shaped the future superstar.
Back in the present. Bawa’s phone is ringing again, and his inboxes are overflowing. “I’m getting deja vu,” he says. It’s something I’ve seen befor.
It was a rush of adrenaline back then. Yaar ye sab dekh chuka hun abhi aisa lag raha ki yaar ye sab dekh chuka hun (Now I feel like I have seen all these things before). Yes, I’m a little emotional since Raj is my son,” Bawa replies, his voice thick.
Raj Angad Bawa, Sukhwinder Bawa’s son, has not put a foot wrong at the 2022 U-19 World Cup. In the first match, he had a four-wicket haul against South Africa and then 42 against Ireland. He eclipsed Shikhar Dhawan’s 155 against Scotland in 2004 as the highest score by an Indian at a U-19 World Cup with his 108-ball unbroken 162 — including 14 fours and eight sixes.
Raj’s father-coach, Sukhwinder Bawa, wants his son to develop into a proper all-rounder and concentrate on his batting.
He appears to have reserved his finest performance for the final versus England. With blazing figures of 5 for 31 as he swept through England’s middle order, he was the destroyer-in-chief for India; it was the finest bowling performance ever in a U-19 World Cup final.
The dismissal of George Bell impressed Bawa the most. The first ball was a well-directed bouncer.
“He can’t possibly do anything wrong today,” Sukhwinder Bawa says. “Any fast bowler would be proud of that dismissal.” Bell, I’m sure, wasn’t expecting a bouncer on the first pitch he faced. It was accomplished flawlessly.
To uske DNA mey hai, fast bowling (Fast bowling is in his DNA). In a U-12 encounter in Gurgaon, he struck up a five-wicket haul. The Indian Express quotes Sukhwinder.

Sukhwinder was adamant because he didn’t want his youngster to grow up to be a tailender. “I wanted him to develop into a true batter, not some fast bowler who can’t even face ten balls,” says the coach. For over five years, I worked on his batting and never let him bowl pace.
After being selected for the Vijay Merchant Trophy with the Punjab U-16 team, Raj developed a penchant for fast bowling. Sukhwinder had told him to focus on his batting, but the youngster decided to bowl in the nets and asked everyone to keep it a secret.
