Mohammad Rizwan will play county cricket for the first time in 2022, after securing a deal to play for Sussex between April and mid-July. From April to mid-July, Pakistan’s wicketkeeper will be available.
Mohammad Rizwan will arrive in England on April 5 following Australia’s tour of Pakistan and will be available for the duration of the County Championship season as well as the entire T20 Blast

In the Blast, he will start the batting alongside Luke Wright, replacing Phil Salt – who has left for Lancashire – as a top-order keeper/batsman, and he is a substitute for Ben Brown in the Championship side following his desire to be released two years early from his contract.
After Shan Masood (Derbyshire), Zafar Gohar (Gloucestershire), and Shaheen Shah Afridi (Middlesex), Rizwan is the fourth Pakistan international to sign for a county for 2022, and with a relatively clear window in their international schedule in the first half of the season, it would be no surprise if more players follow.
Mushtaq Ahmed and Saqlain Mushtaq, both former Sussex county teammates, supplied character references for Rizwan, suggesting he would be “a tremendous addition to our dressing room,” according to Ian Salisbury, Sussex’s Championship and 50-over head coach.
Ian Salisbury said:
“I’d be dishonest if I claimed I wasn’t disappointed to learn we’d be losing a player of Ben Brown’s caliber.”
“Now that that has happened, we must move forward, and I’m glad that we’ve been able to get the services of one of the best keeper-batters in the world as a substitute in the last week or so.”
“Mohammad’s first-class and Test achievements speak for themselves. And bringing him to Sussex for a significant portion of next season’s Championship is a great coup. He and Travis [Head] are the types of seasoned international cricketers from whom our young players can learn a lot.”
Last year’s County Championship saw Sussex take the wooden spoon after finishing bottom of Division Three with a young team. In addition to Mohammad Rizwan, they have added Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Steven Finn this winter. And Travis Head, who struggled in his first season at Hove, is set to return as captain. And the club’s other Championship overseas player.
After Salt’s departure, Sussex T20 coach James Kirtley called Rizwan “one of the most interesting players in the world” and stated he was “a great replacement.”
James Kirtley said:
“I am overjoyed to be able to replace that need with an international player of his caliber,”
“Mohammad Rizwan is a natural leader and an inspiring player. I’m excited to welcome him to Sussex as the latest in a long history of successful cricketers. Who have represented both Pakistan and Sussex.”
