Sunil Gavaskar believes BCCI president Sourav Ganguly is the ideal person to clarify Virat Kohli’s claim that the Indian board did not ask him to reconsider his decision to step down as T20I captain.
Before Virat Kohli declared it wasn’t true, BCCI president Ganguly said the board requested him to reconsider stepping down as T20I captain.
Ganguly started the BCCI had requested him to reconsider his decision days after Kohli stepped down as captain. During his press conference on Wednesday, ahead of the team’s departure for South Africa, Kohli refuted Ganguly’s remark.
Kohli was sacked as ODI captain earlier this month, following his announcement on the T20I captaincy.
Kohli revealed during his press conference that he was relieved of his ODI captaincy 90 minutes before the team was to be selected for the South Africa tour. On that point, Sunil Gavaskar believed that selection committee chairman Chetan Sharma had done nothing wrong.
Sunil Gavaskar, the former India captain said:
“I think it [Kohli’s comment] actually doesn’t bring the BCCI into the picture. I think it’s the individual who has to be asked where he got the impression he had conveyed such a message to Kohli. So, that’s the only thing,”

To avoid such problems in the future, Gavaskar believes the BCCI should communicate more clearly – and publicly – on major selection decisions
“Yes, having a clear channel of communication is usually beneficial to avoid conjecture. So, as a result of what has occurred, there should be an open line of communication, and the chairman of the selection committee should be able to come down and explain why [someone] was chosen and why [someone] was not chosen.
“A press release is sometimes sufficient, even if it is not required. A well-written press release that explains all of the reasons makes life much easier.”
“I’m not sure what these people were hoping to accomplish. It’s the decent thing to do as long as the head of the selection committee and he have communicated.”
Former India captain Kapil Dev, meanwhile, said it that “not a good thing” for the current Test captain and board president to oppose each other in public. Instead, he believes the focus should be on the upcoming South African tour.
“It is not appropriate to point fingers at anyone at this time. The South Africa tour is approaching, and you need to pay attention to it “When asked about Kohli’s remark, Kapil remarked.
“I’d say board president is board president, but the captain of the Indian cricket team is very important. But, whether it’s Sourav or Kohli, I don’t think it’s a good idea to criticize each other in public.” Sunil Gavaskar
