Gloucestershire Appointed Dale Benkenstein As Head Coach

Gloucestershire on a three-year term has been named head coach Dale Benkenstein, a former South African batter, and batting coach.

Benkenstein, 47, is a former Durham captain who served as head coach at Hampshire from 2014 to 2016, guiding the club to two Vitality Blast Finals Days and promotion back to the Championship.

From 2017 to 2019, he was the Proteas’ batting coach, and he has also coached the Dolphins of South Africa. On a three-year deal, the former Proteas hitter and batting coach return to county cricket.

On a short-term deal as batting coach earlier this year. According to a deal revealed on Tuesday, he will head Gloucestershire at least until the end of the 2024 season.

“I’m excited to work with a well-balanced group of youth and experience. And I believe the club as a whole has the ingredients to be consistent in all formats,” Benkenstein stated. “It’s great to be back in English county cricket, where I have a lot of pleasant memories.”

During his 20-year career, Benkenstein made 300 List A and 264 first-class appearances. Scoring 15,962 first-class runs and almost 9,000 limited-overs runs.

He began his career in South Africa with Natal, where he was elected captain at the age of 22. And led the team to four-day and one-day domestic titles. Benkenstein made his One-Day International debut for South Africa against England in 1998. And he went on to play 23 ODIs in total.

He joined Durham in 2005 and led them to their first major title. In 2007 when they defeated Hampshire in the Friends Provident competition final. In 2008 and 2009, he guided Durham to back-to-back Championship wins, the first in the club’s history.

Benkenstein will work at Gloucestershire alongside new performance director Steve Snell. And deputy’s head coach Ian Harvey, who served as interim head coach. When Richard Dawson joined the ECB as an elite performance pathway coach last March.

“It’s been a tremendous honor for me to lead the team this season, and I’m extremely proud of what the squads have accomplished,” Harvey said. Some of the performances in the County Championship have been outstanding, and these players have a bright future ahead of them.”
