Marnus Labuschagne, free of leadership obligations, is hoping to imitate the consistency of the best Test bats of this period, knowing he has a “target on the back” ahead of his home Ashes debut. Australia’s No. 3 is one of the few players in the Ashes who has played a significant amount of cricket.
After being thrown into the Lord’s Test as a concussion substitute, Labuschagne has enjoyed a meteoric ascent since his breakout Ashes tour in 2019.
Labuschagne has quickly moved into the top echelon of batters worldwide following a few dominant Australian summers, but he understands that a steady stream of runs will be required to be considered among the modern greats.
Labuschagne was unmovable at the crease during his 2019-20 Australian summer, scoring four hundred against Pakistan and New Zealand, but found things a little more difficult last season against India, whose skilled quicks bowled a straighter line with two square-legs frequently in position.
Despite the fact that India famously clinched the series, Labuschagne looked to work things out and closed the series with a century at the Gabba.
England’s assault, lead by talisman James Anderson, is thought to be following India’s playbook in their search for a similar upset.

And bolstered the top-order alongside veterans David Warner. And Steve Smith with a swiftly developing career that now boasts five hundred at an average of 60.80 from 18 Tests.
Labuschagne will face Anderson for the first time in Tests in what is shaping up to be a decisive clash. In the Ashes after they did not meet during the 2019 series when Anderson was hurt. During the opening match at Edgbaston.
“I’m definitely looking forward to facing Jimmy with that challenge,” he remarked. “You don’t get that many wickets and be England’s best ever without being quality,” he says.
Both teams have been hampered by quarantines. And Brisbane’s inclement weather ahead of the first Test, but Labuschagne comes into the Ashes well prepared. Having scored two hundred for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield.
However, he was certain that Australia’s T20 World Cup-winning players would not be caught off guard by the red ball.
